Samsung Develops Intel Lakefield-Based Galaxy Book S: Always-Connected x86 PC

Among several items at its developers conference this week, Samsung revealed that it was working on a version of its always-connected Galaxy Book S laptop powered by Intel’s Lakefield processor. When it becomes available in 2020, the notebook is expected to be the first mobile PC powered by Intel’s hybrid SoC, which containing a mix of high-performance and energy-efficient cores.

There are many laptop users nowadays who want their PCs to be very sleek, offer decent performance, be always connected to the Internet, and to last for a long time on a charge. Modern premium x86-based notebooks are very compact and can be equipped with a 4G/LTE modem, but even configured properly, the extra radio brings a hit to battery life over a non-modem model. The immediate solution is of course to use Intel’s low-power/energy-efficient Atom SoCs or Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors tailored for notebooks, but this will have an impact on performance.

To offer both performance and energy efficiency for always-connected notebooks, Intel has developed its Lakefield SoC that features one high-performance Ice Lake core, four energy-efficient Tremont cores, as well as Gen 11 graphics & media cores. Internally, Intel’s Lakefield consists of two dies — a 10 nm Compute die and a 14 nm Base die — integrated into one chip using the company’s Foveros 3D packaging technology to minimize its footprint. Courtesy of Foveros, the chip measures 12×12 mm and can be integrated into a variety of emerging always-connected devices.

As it turns out, Samsung’s upcoming version of the 13.3-inch Galaxy Book S will be the first to use Intel’s Lakefield, where it will be paired with Intel’s 4G/LTE modem to offer Internet connectivity everywhere.

Samsung is not disclosing pricing or availability details for its Lakefield-powered Galaxy Book S; but since Intel plans to start production of the SoC this quarter, expect the machine to launch in 2020.

Game Of Thrones Showrunners Had Plans For Jedi Origin Story Before Lucasfilm Exit

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss exited the Star Wars universe this week, walking away from their commitments as it pertains to the creation of the next trilogy on Monday.

The pair are the latest directors to break ties with Lucasfilm once the realization that their visions for the franchise weren't coming to life set in. And, according to Variety, they had plans to step back from the Skywalker saga and channel the focus on how the Jedi came to be.

One can deduce that the trilogy would most likely have been set during the days of The Old Republic, way before the events of The Phantom Menace. But it's been understood that there were creative differences that led to Benioff and Weiss leaving.

“It’s like if you take a job as a ‘Star Wars’ director or creator you’re automatically thrown in the Sarlacc Pit and your chances of getting out and making that film are so unlikely you have to almost be a Jedi master,” says Jeff Bock, an Exhibitor Relations box office analyst says.

PREVIOUSLY: Disney Bans Netflix Ads Across Almost All Its Properties In Preparation For Disney+

The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that the pair's mega-contract with Netflix was also an issue as the terms require them to be exclusively present on set during productions relating to their projects. There was no way that could have been fulfilled if they were also working on Star Wars films.

"Benioff and Weiss had ambitious plans to take the “Star Wars” universe in a new direction, one that would exist apart from the Skywalker family saga that comprised the franchise’s centerpiece nine-film series," Variety reports. "The “Star Wars” period the pair was interested in exploring was how the Jedi came to exist. However, Lucasfilm executives and the creators begin to see their visions for the films diverge during meetings last summer."

Suggestions that Benioff and Weiss were still hungover from the backlash brought on by the ending of Game of Thrones and were hesitant to jump into a project so significantly different from their last have also emerged.

It would have been great to get a Jedi origin story from the franchise and this is all pretty regrettable. But there's still a chance of a film set years before the Skywalker saga as it's been rumored that a Knights of the Old Republic movie could hit screens in time to come.

Razer Cuts Bluetooth Audio Lag with Hammerhead Wireless Earbuds

Razer this year has been on the rampage of new product announcements, bringing dozens of devices to the market and entering new categories. Adding to the company's lineup, this week the company introduced its Hammerhead wireless earbuds, which promise to reduce the audio lag that Bluetooth headphones are typically known for. The headset is compatible with all Bluetooth devices and supports touch controls to control calls, music, and virtual assistants.

Razer’s Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds use a 13-mm driver with a 20 Hz – 20 KHz frequency response, a 32 ± 15% Ohms impedance, and a 91 ± 3 dB @ 1 kHz sensitivity; as well as an omnidirectional MEMS microphone with a -42 ± 3 dB sensitivity, a ≥55 dB signal-to-noise ratio, and a 300 Hz – 5 kHz frequency response. Each earbud is equipped with a 275 mAh rechargeable Li-Po battery, with Razer touting a battery life of up to three hours.

The headset connects to smartphones (or other devices) using ‘a customized ultra-low latency’ Bluetooth 5.0 connection that reduces lag in Gaming Mode (enabled in a special app that accompanies the product) down to 60 ms. Low latency is particularly useful for playing games and watching movies as audio that is lagging behind video is clearly annoying. Razer does not say whether the fast BT connection is enabled by a special piece of hardware, though it looks like the manufacturer has customized its BT-enabling chip and radio using firmware tweaks.

Form-factor wise, the Hammerhead are black in-ear earbuds with silicon ear sleeves that are IP4X rated for sweat and splash protected. The earbuds are not meant to block all the environment noises and they also do not feature active noise cancellation, so they perform like the majority of headsets available today. As for controls, the earbuds can detect single press, double tap, triple tap, triple tap & hold last tap, and hold for two seconds gestures to control various aspects of their operation. The gestures can be customized in a companion app for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems.

The Hammerhead True Wireless headset comes in a charging case that can charge it for up to four times, enabling up to 16 hours of total battery life, according to the manufacturer. The case connects to its power brick using a USB Type-C cable.

Razer’s Hammerhead wireless earbuds are now available directly from the company for $99.99 in the US and €119.99 in Europe.

The Intel Core i9-9900KS Review: The 5 GHz Consumer Special

Intel likes 5.0 GHz processors. The one area where it claims a clear advantage over AMD is in its ability to drive the frequency of its popular 14nm process. Earlier this week, we reviewed the Core i9-9990XE, which is a rare auction only CPU but with 14 cores at 5.0 GHz, built for the high-end desktop and high frequency trading market. Today we are looking at its smaller sibling, the Core i9-9900KS, built in numbers for the consumer market: eight cores at 5.0 GHz. But you’ll have to be quick, as Intel isn’t keeping this one around forever. Read on for the full review.

Intel Launches Low-End Comet Lake CPUs: Pentium Gold 6405U & Celeron 5205U

Intel has quietly added two new inexpensive processors into its Comet Lake-U lineup. The Pentium Gold 6405U and Celeron 5205U CPUs will be used for entry-level thin-and-light laptops that need one of the latest-generation processors, but are not designed for performance-demanding workloads.

Intel’s Pentium Gold 6405U and Celeron 5205U are dual-core processors that run at 2.4 GHz and 1.9 GHz, respectively. Both CPUs have TDPs of 15 Watts – the same as the rest of the Comet Lake-U family – and include 2 MB of L3 cache, Intel UHD Graphics, a dual-channel DDR4/LPDDR3 memory controller, and feature 12 PCIe 2.0 lanes for expansion. Both SKUs are considerably cheaper than the rest models in the Comet Lake series (which start at $281): the Pentium Gold 6405U processor carries a $161 recommended customer price, whereas the Celeron 5205U costs $107 when purchased in 1000-units quantities.

Celeron 5205U 2C/2C 1.9 - - 2 MB 15W 610? 900 2400 ? $107

Up until now, Intel’s Comet Lake-U family included only four CPUs, three of which were aimed at premium laptops. The addition of considerably cheaper processors allows Intel to address more market segments with its Comet Lake products by equipping its partners to build cheaper systems using the latest motherboard designs.

Otherwise, as is almost always the case for low-end Core SKUs, these are presumably salvage chips from Intel's operations. The new Pentium and Celeron chips are clocked lower than the Core i3-10110U, allowing Intel to put to work silicon that otherwise wouldn't have been usable as a Core i3. Which for Intel is particularly important at a time where demand for inexpensive U-series mobile CPUs is running high, helping the company please its partners who have suffered from tight supply of Intel’s 14 nm processors in the recent quarters.

Disney Bans Netflix Ads Across Almost All Its Properties In Preparation For Disney+

Disney has removed Netflix ads from all of its properties apart from ESPN as it prepares to enter the streaming world via Disney+.

Although there are more streaming services out there than anyone could ever need, there is one that stands tall above all others. That platform is Netflix. Amazon Prime and HBO Now might be doing well, but none of them hold a candle to Netflix. 137 million people around the world are subscribed to the service. That's quite the global reach.

RELATED: Netflix Is Losing $135 Million Per Month Thanks To Users Sharing Accounts

A contender to Netflix's streaming crown is about to emerge, though. Disney's offering to the already crowded arena, Disney+. Name value alone will mean Disney+ performs well, but Disney continues to go above and beyond to make sure its service doesn't get lost in the crowd at Netflix's feet. It wants to breathe the rarified air alongside its main rival.

via The Verge

Disney has already demonstrated that desire in a number of ways. First of all, its price. At $6.99, Disney+ will cost consumers less per month than Netflix. Secondly, its content. Not only will the platform be loaded with boatloads of original series based in the MCU and Star Wars universe, but it seems as if pretty much every movie and TV show Disney has ever made will be on the platform at launch.

Disney has now hit Netflix with another body blow, reports CNBC. It is no longer allowing Netflix to advertise on its properties. Considering how much Disney owns in 2019, that's a lot of stuff. The only property of Disney's that Netflix will still be able to advertise on going forward is ESPN. Plus, and this probably goes without saying, there will be no sign of Netflix ads on Disney+ as, like Netflix, Disney's streaming service will be ad-free.

Disney isn't just sending warning shots to Netflix. It's also been bickering with the streaming service that currently occupies the number two spot, Amazon Prime. As of right now, Amazon can still advertise on Disney's properties, but that might change in the future. Disney+ officially launches in the US on November 12, 2019, and is already out to prove that it most definitely means business.

Tom Brady & Patrick Mahomes Lead NFL Jersey Sales For 2019

Tom Brady is the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history, while Patrick Mahomes has displayed the makings to go down as the single greatest talent the game has ever witnessed.

So it's only fitting that the two superstar quarterbacks sit atop the NFL jersey sales for the year 2019. Brady and Mahomes sit first and second, respectively, according to the NFL's official Instagram page.

Two Dallas Cowboys superstars made the top five. Running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott are third and fifth, respectively. Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack is fourth in jersey sales.

Rounding out the remainder of the top 10 (in order) are Saquon Barkley, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Daniel Jones and JuJu Smith-Schuster. The top 10 really didn't change much from last year, with only two player changes.

Brady also sat atop jersey sales for 2018, while Mack finished second. Mahomes was third, followed by Elliott and Barkley at fourth and fifth, respectively. Brees (sixth), Baker Mayfield (seventh), Carson Wentz (eighth), Prescott (ninth) and Smith-Schuster (10th) rounded out the top 10.

And in 2017, Brady was second in jersey sales behind only Wentz. Prescott finished third. Elliott (fifth) and Rodgers (sixth) also found themselves in the top 10.

Related: Gridiron Billionaires: The 10 Wealthiest NFL Owners

via Reed Hoffmann/AP

In 2017, Brady captured his third MVP award en route to leading the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl LII appearance. He won his sixth Super Bowl ring last season, helping the Pats narrowly escape the Los Angeles Rams.

Mahomes had one of the greatest seasons ever in 2018, winning the MVP award after tossing 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions. Prior to a knee injury he suffered in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes was a leading candidate to win MVP once again.

The Chiefs quarterback figures to land the richest NFL contract in history when his next deal eventually runs up. And if Mahomes continues this ridiculous pace we've seen through two seasons, it won't be long until he eventually takes over Brady as the top jersey seller.

SiFive Announces First RISC-V OoO CPU Core: The U8-Series Processor IP

In the last few year’s we’ve seen an increasing amount of talk about RISC-V and it becoming real competitor to the Arm in the embedded market. Indeed, we’ve seen a lot of vendors make the switch from licensing Arm’s architecture and IP designs to the open-source RISC-V architecture and either licensed or custom-made IP based on the ISA. While many vendors do choose to design their own microarchitectures to replace Arm-based microcontroller designs in their products, things get a little bit more complicated once you scale up in performance. It’s here where SiFive comes into play as a RISC-V IP vendor offering more complex designs for companies to license – essentially a similar business model to Arm’s – just that it’s based on the new open ISA.

Today’s announcement marks a milestone in SiFive’s IP offering as the company is revealing its first ever out-of-order CPU microarchitecture, promising a significant performance jump over existing RISC-V cores, and offering competitive PPA metrics compared to Arm’s products. We’ll be taking a look at the microarchitecture of the new U8 Series CPU and how it’s built and what it promises to deliver.

AMD Q3 FY 2019 Earnings Report: Party Like It’s 2005

Today AMD announced their third quarter earnings for the 2019 fiscal year, and AMD has not seen revenue like this for a long time – in fact this is the highest quarterly revenue since 2005 for the company. AMD’s revenue jumped 9% year-over-year to $1.8 billion, and at least as importantly, AMD had gross margins of 43%, which is up 3% over last year, and the highest margins they’ve seen since 2012. Operating income was up 24% to $186 million, and net income was up 18% to $120 million. This resulted in earnings-per-share of $0.11, up 22% from Q3 2018.

AMD Q3 2019 Financial Results (GAAP)
  Q3'2019 Q2'2019 Q3'2018
Revenue $1801M $1531M $1653M
Gross Margin 43% 41% 40%
Operating Income $186M $59M $150M
Net Income $120M $35M $102M
Earnings Per Share $0.11 $0.03 $0.09

This is the first full quarter for AMD since the launch of their 7 nm Zen 2 processor, and AMD attributes the revenue growth to the Computing and Graphics, but offset by lower revenue in Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom. Revenue for the Computing and Graphics segment was up 36% year-over-year to $1.28 billion, thanks to both increased volume and Average Selling Price (ASP) for Ryzen on the desktop. GPU ASP also increased year-over-year thanks to higher channel sales. The Computing and Graphics segment had operating income of $179 million, which is up 79% from a year ago.

AMD Q3 2019 Computing and Graphics
  Q3'2019 Q2'2019 Q3'2018
Revenue $1276M $940M $938M
Operating Income $179M $22M $100M

Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom had revenue of $525 million for the quarter, down 27% year-over-year, mostly attributed to semi-custom sales, which makes sense since a large chunk of that is for the AMD APU powering both the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One, both of which are scheduled for new models in the next calendar year. Offsetting this was higher EPYC processor sales, although not enough of an offset to cover the semi-custom drop. Operating income for this segment was $61 million, down 29% from a year ago.

AMD Q3 2019 Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom
  Q3'2019 Q2'2019 Q3'2018
Revenue $525M $591M $715M
Operating Income $61M $89M $86M

Finally, AMD’s All Other category reported an operating loss of $54 million, which is a 50% larger loss than a year ago.

AMD had some big news in Q3, with multiple design wins for both Ryzen and EPYC, including Cray’s Shasta supercomputer leveraging 2nd Generation EPYC, and AMD getting a big design win in the PC space with the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3.

Looking ahead to Q4, AMD is expecting revenue of $2.1 billion, plus or minus $50 million, with a Non-GAAP gross margin of approximately 44%.

10 Rules Celebrity Chefs Followed to Become Successful

Behind the fame of the celebrity chefs we love, there is a lot of hard work, passion, entrepreneurial spirit, and smart business decisions. As a result, their names became a powerful and lucrative brand. Most of them have an empire with licensed products, cooking books, and restaurant chains.

RELATED: The 10 Best Electric Smokers of 2019

They all invest their money in high-quality products and are always learning. Those chefs are also natural leaders who can motivate and choose outstanding people to work for them. Some of the rules they followed to become successful can be followed by anyone, even if they work in a completely different area. Here are 10 rules that celebrity chefs follow to become successful.

10 Jamie Oliver - Overcome Adversities

Jamie Oliver is one of the wealthiest chefs in the world and has a net worth evaluated at $300 million. When he started on television, his vibrant personality and youthful looks changed the idea of celebrity chefs forever. It didn't take long until he created an empire with cookbooks, products, and restaurants.

Oliver says that his success was not just because he loved to cook, but because he had to work harder than others due to his dyslexia. It gave him a different perspective of the world.

9 Nigella Lawson - Just be yourself

Nigella Lawson became a household name 20 years ago when she released the cookbook How to Eat. Since then, Lawson has built a stable career as a TV star. Although she refuses to use the title of chef, she is one of the most famous chefs on television.

Lawson had no intention to achieve fame. Perhaps that's why she kept being herself, and she believes she is the opposite of the untouchable beauty queen. And just being herself was enough to make her adored by millions of people around the globe.

8 Gordon Ramsay - Be a perfectionist

Gordon Ramsay is a famous chef and has 35 restaurants around the world. He became a household name thanks to reality TV shows, where the public can see his strong personality. He has a net worth estimated at $22 million.

RELATED:  10 Most Expensive Restaurant Meals in The World

Ramsey has achieved a lot, and several things have led to his success. But perhaps the first step is his dedication always to deliver a perfect dish and understand that it is mandatory to be part of his team.

7 Rachael Ray - work harder Than anyone

Rachel Ray is always busy. She's a celebrity chef, a bestselling author, and also has launched a magazine. Ray also found time to release a non-profit organization. The multiple endeavors helped her to build a $80 million empire.

Ray learned one of the things that would bring her success from her mother when she was young. The TV star revealed in an interview that her mother taught her to work harder than anyone, never complain about it, and never go to bed before she is happy with what she is making.

6 Guy Fieri - Have A Mentor

Guy Fieri saw his life change when he won the Next Food Network Star in 2006. He already had a restaurant, but the reality TV show gave him a new status, and he got his own show, Guy's Big Bite. Fieri believes that his success is thanks to more experienced people who helped him at the beginning. Having a mentor is always helpful in any career.
