Best Motherboards: Q1 2020

Catching up on the state of motherboards for the quarter, the first part of 2020 has been very quiet. Overall, only a handful of new motherboards have been released, and none of which are particularly notable, as motherboard launches are increasingly centered around new platform launches from Intel/AMD. Which isn't to say that Q1 has been a complete snooze; we did see the Threadripper 3990X launch, but those motherboards were already in the market.

The upshot, at least, is that Q2 looks to be a busy period. Barring the very real possibility of Coronavirus-related delays, this quarter should see Intel unveil its Z490 chipset for its Comet Lake desktop processors, while AMD will have its more budget-orientated B550 chipset. So Q2 is going to be a busy quarter for motherboard vendors. With that in mind, here are our recommended picks for the Q1 2020 period.

WhatsApp Gold: The Fake "Upgrade" You Should Avoid At All Costs

A scam persuading WhatsApp users to upgrade their service has resurfaced amid people using social media more than ever before.

As most of us are cooped up at home for the foreseeable future, social media services are likely to experience more traffic than ever before. Facebook, which also owns WhatsApp and Instagram, has admitted it is struggling to cope with the strain put on its services over the past few weeks. TechRadar reports the number of people using its apps' video chat features has doubled.

Social media is often painted in a bad light but right now it is more important than ever. It allows its users to stay connected when they have to remain apart all over the world. However, one of the darker aspects has managed to rear its ugly head. A scam that has been doing the rounds for years but has resurfaced in recent weeks.

RELATED: Mark Zuckerberg Gives Reason For Wanting To Merge Messenger, WhatsApp & Instagram

The promise of an upgrade to WhatsApp labeled WhatsApp Gold. The fancier version of the app, long rumored to be used by the rich and famous, doesn't actually exist. The link being sent will actually install malicious software on a person's phone if clicked. If the link is sent to you at any point, ignore it, do not click it, and definitely do not forward it on.

via TechRadar

This isn't the first WhatsApp scam to do the rounds, although it may be the most damaging one/easiest scam to fall for. Other scams have warned users against watching certain videos, most infamously the "Martinelli" video. It warned that a video would be delivered to users the following day and for them to avoid it at all costs. Months later, it would appear this video doesn't actually exist.

Should you receive a message offering you WhatsApp Gold in the coming weeks, or a message touting any sort of premium WhatsApp service, your best bet is to completely ignore it. Also warn others of the scams, especially those who might be using the app for the first time due to the current circumstances. It might appear obvious to some that it's a scam, but plenty of others will happily click on the link.

Steve Ballmer Claims Clippers Will Lose At Least $10 Million Over Season Suspension

Wednesday will mark three weeks since the NBA put its 2019-20 season on pause due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak.

The NBA decided to suspend the season after Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Teammate Donovan Mitchell and Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics later tested positive as well, but all three players have since been cleared.

The league has not decided yet if they will cancel the season. The NHL and MLS also put their respective seasons on hold, while the 2020 MLB season has been suspended indefinitely; it was slated to begin last Thursday.

Public health and safety is the top priority here, and NBA owners are fully preparing to lose "hundreds of millions of dollars" during the 2019-20 shutdown.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer revealed that his team stands to lose at least $10 million dollars during the 2019-20 season shutdown.

"It’ll be eight digits," Ballmer said. "Now you’ve got to start with what we were either going to make or lose before the season started, but net, net, net, it’ll certainly be an eight-digit loss for us."

Prior to suspension, his Clippers stood second in the Western Conference with a 44-20 record. The club was in the midst of its most highly anticipated season ever, having signed 2019 NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard before trading for Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Paul George in the offseason. Leonard led the Toronto Raptors to the NBA Championship last season before he decided to join his hometown team.

RELATED: Warriors Owner Claims They Have A Greater Revenue Than Lakers & Knicks

The Clippers entered the 2019-20 season as one of the primary favorites to win the NBA Championship. Only the Los Angeles Lakers (49-14) were ahead of them in the Western Conference standings. The Milwaukee Bucks hold the league's best record at 53-12.

Forbes estimates that Ballmer, who previously served as the CEO for Microsoft, is worth $55 billion. So losing $10-plus million obviously isn't going to seriously impact the big market Clippers, compared to smaller market teams with less revenue streams.

Ballmer announced last week that he and wife Connie would donate over $25 million to help fight the COVID-19 virus.

Houston Texans Reportedly Offer Laremy Tunsil $18.5 Million A Year

The Houston Texans paid a premium to land offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. Now it's time to pay him.

Tunsil, 25, is coming off the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. The market for offensive linemen is rapidly increasing each year, so it's no wonder that the Texans are preparing to give him a lucrative long-term deal.

According to a report from Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans offered Tunsil a deal that would have paid him an average of $18.5 million annually. However, Tunsil eyeing even more than that.

The Ole Miss product certainly holds the leverage here. Texans head coach and GM Bill O'Brien surrendered a package that included two first-round picks and a 2021 second-rounder to land Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills.

So after giving up that much for their services, O'Brien cannot afford to lose Tunsil, and he knows that the stud offensive lineman needs a long-term deal.

Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson took a whopping 62 sacks in the 2018 season. Though the offensive line remained a weakness in 2019, Watson's sack total fell down to 44, thanks in large part to the efforts of Tunsil.

RELATED: Ronald Darby Signs $4 Million Contract With Washington

Thanks to Watson and a much improved offensive line, the Texans reached the AFC Divisional Round, but they blew a 24-0 lead and fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Tunsil is in great position to become the highest-paid offensive tackle in the league. Right now, Trent Brown of the Las Vegas Raiders carries the highest cap hit among all tackles at $21.5 million, according to Spotrac. Next on that list is Nate Solder of the New York Giants ($19.5 million), followed by Taylor Lewan (Tennessee Titans, $18.2 million) and Anthony Castonzo (Indianapolis Colts, $17 million).

Given Tunsil's age, and the fact that he's coming of his best season yet, he is more than deserving of becoming the highest-paid tackle in the league. Early contract talks suggest that he'll get there.

TUF Goes FreeSync Premium: ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B 27-Inch 165Hz DCI-P3 Monitor

ASUS brought its TUF Gaming sub-brand to the market a couple of years ago to address needs of mainstream gamers. But as requirements evolve, the company has added premium features to TUF Gaming-branded products every now and then. This time around ASUS has introduced a new TUF-branded 27-inch curved monitor that boasts with AMD’s FreeSync Premium certification, a wider-than-sRGB color gamut, and a 165 Hz refresh rate.

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B monitor is based on a 27-inch curved VA panel featuring a 1920×1080 resolution, 250 nits luminance, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles, a 1 ms MPRT response time, and a 165 Hz maximum refresh rate. The LCD can reproduce 120% of the sRGB as well as 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamuts, which is rather good for a monitor that is supposed to be (at least relatively) inexpensive.

One of the key selling points of the TUF Gaming VG27VH1B is that the monitor features a scaler that supports VESA’s Adaptive-Sync variable refresh rate technology. The display is also certified to meet AMD’s FreeSync Premium requirements, which, as you'd expect for a high refresh rate display, means it officially supports low framerate compensation (LFC) mode. All told, the monitor supports refresh rates from 50 Hz up to 165 Hz.

As for other technologies, the TUF Gaming VG27VH1B also fully supports ASUS’s ELMB (extreme low motion blur) technology, which is designed to make fast-action scenes look sharper. What is particularly important about this ELMB implementation is that it can work together with Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync, so that it isn't an either/or situation. Other notable capabilities of the new TUF monitor include in-game enhancements techniques like Shadow Boost, GamePlus modes (Crosshair, Timer, FPS Counter, Display Alignment), and GameVisual genre-tailored modes.

One interesting thing to note about the TUF Gaming VG27VH1B is its set of inputs that includes one D-Sub connector for legacy PCs as well as two HDMI 2.0 ports to connect modern PCs, but there aren't any DisplayPort inputs. On the audio side of things, the monitor has 2W stereo speakers along with a line-in and a headphone out connector.

As for ergonomics, the ASUS VG27VH1B comes with a stand that can adjust tilt and swivel, but not height. Also, the display has VESA 100×100 mounting holes.

Best Consumer Hard Drives: Q1 2020

Data storage requirements have kept increasing over the last several years. While SSDs have taken over the role of the primary drive in most computing systems, hard drives continue to be the storage media of choice in areas dealing with large amount of relatively cold data. Hard drives are also suitable for workloads that are largely sequential and not performance sensitive. SSDs are yet to achieve the low $/GB metric that makes HDDs attractive in that market segment. From a gaming perspective, install sizes of 100s of GBs are increasingly common for modern games. Despite the falling flash prices, high-capacity SSDs still tend to carry a price premium, making hard drives attractive in this market segment. This guide will help readers choose the appropriate hard drive based on their workload, while also keeping the price factor in mind.

Dodgers & Red Sox Stand To Lose Most In Ticket Revenue If MLB Season Is Cancelled

The 2020 MLB season was originally scheduled to begin on Thursday - with all 30 teams in action - but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to put the campaign on pause.
Multiple reports suggest that the 2020 season may not even start until June or July. The 2019-20 NHL seasons are also currently on pause, with both postseasons scheduled to begin in April.
Leagues and teams stand to lose tens of millions (perhaps up to hundreds) in million during a suspension in play, but they obviously understand that public safety and health is the top priority.
If the 2020 MLB season is cancelled, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox stand to lose the most money. TicketIQ.com projected that the Dodgers would lose about $13.104 million in secondary market ticket prices. The New York Yankees were projected to lose the most at about $15.186 million.
If half the season was postponed or cancelled, TicketIQ projected the Dodgers to lose out on approx. $200.189 million for ticket sales, followed by the Red Sox at around $180.535 million. In comparison, the Miami Marlins were projected to lose the smallest amount of ticket sales (approx. $23.237 million).

Using the numbers ansd estimations from TicketIQ, Michael J. Duarte of NBC Los Angeles pointed out that the Dodgers could lose over $405 million in ticket sales if the entire 2020 season was lost. The Red Sox would miss out on approx. $365.583 million.
Those estimates suggest that the Yankees would lose the third most at about $360.179 million, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals (slightly under $310 million) and the Chicago Cubs (about $297.105 million).
Of course, it's highly unlikely that the entire 2020 MLB season will get canceled, but the league and players have to be prepared for anything. All signs point towards the season not starting any time before June. Even if the season isn't postponed, it's going to be difficult for MLB to successfully run a 162-game season.

Baltimore Ravens Give Derek Wolfe One-Year, $6 Million Contract

The Baltimore Ravens weren't able to finalize a three-year deal with Michael Brockers, so they settled on a cheaper option.

On Saturday afternoon, the Ravens signed former Denver Broncos pass rusher Derek Wolfe to a one-year contract worth $6 million. ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news:

Wolfe just finished a four-year contract worth $36.7 million that was signed with the Broncos in Jan. 2016, several weeks before their Super Bowl 50 championship. The 30-year-old spent his first eight NFL seasons in the Mile High City.

He'll join a Baltimore team that has completely revamped its front seven. They acquired Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro pass rusher Calais Campbell from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick last week.

Wolfe is coming off the most productive season of his career, recording seven sacks in 12 games for the Broncos. In all, he has 33 sacks and 15 passes defended for his career.

Wolfe and Campbell should be excellent fits in the defensive system of Don 'Wink' Martindale, who has quickly developed one of the NFL's top front seven units.

RELATED: Xavier Rhodes' One-Year Deal With Colts Is Worth Around $5 Million

The Ravens, led by MVP Lamar Jackson, finished with the top record in the NFL last season at 14-2. However, they were upset by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Divisional Round, losing by a final score of 28-12.

The Denver defense has undergone a plethora of changes since their Super Bowl 50 championship season. They already allowed Pro Bowl cornerback Chris Harris Jr. to leave in free agency (for the Los Angeles Chargers), leaving Von Miller as the lone star remaining from that Super Bowl team.

Baltimore's front office has a rich history of finding true bargains in free agency, and Wolfe shouldn't be an exception. He's been a consistent producer in the pass rushing game, and the Ravens should find a way to maximize his talents. Should Wolfe perform well on this new deal, he'll set himself up nicely for a more lucrative contract in 2021 free agency.

Michael Brockers' Contract With Rams Carries Max Value Of $31.5 Million

Michael Brockers' three-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens was never completed, so he's heading back to the Los Angeles Rams.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Brockers will receive a three-year deal with a base value of $24 million. The maximum value of the contract for the 29-year-old is $31.5 million.

This deal is similar to the one that Brockers was about to sign with Baltimore (three years, $30 million). But per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com,  the two parties couldn't finalize the contract since free agents are currently disallowed from participating in physicals.

So while Brockers decided to go back to the Rams, the Ravens wound up signing former Denver Broncos pass rusher Derek Wolfe to a one-year deal worth $6 million in order to get a boost on their front seven.

Brockers has spent his entire career with the Rams; they drafted him 14th overall in 2012. He was instrumental in helping the Rams reach Super Bowl LIII, where they lost to the New England Patriots.

RELATED: Xavier Rhodes' One-Year Deal With Colts Is Worth Around $5 Million

Keeping Brockers was a huge win for the Los Angeles front office, because they've lost plenty of key contributors here in the offseason. The cap-strapped Rams released Pro Bowler and oft-injured running back Todd Gurley, who wound up signing with the Atlanta Falcons soon after. They did manage to re-sign respected offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth to a three-year deal, however.

The Rams also saw pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. sign a one-year deal with the Falcons. The former Jacksonville Jaguars' first-round pick had tremendous success with the Rams, but they weren't in position to match the three-year, $48 million Atlanta gave him.

Brockers has recorded 23 sacks through his first eight NFL seasons, including three last season. Brockers and Aaron Donald round out one of the league's best front seven units, and the Rams will rely on them once again in 2020 as they try to get back into the postseason.

Xavier Rhodes' One-Year Deal With Colts Is Worth Around $5 Million

After being released by the Minnesota Vikings, Xavier Rhodes didn't have to wait long to find a new home.

The three-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts, and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the deal is worth close to $5 million.

Coming off a frustrating season with the Vikings, and with most of the top free agents already signed, Rhodes was unlikely to receive much more than that. He gets the opportunity to reset his market for next year.

And if Rhodes can play like a Pro Bowler again, he could very well receive a multi-year deal in 2021. Sometimes, a fresh start is all a player needs.

July will mark three years since the Vikings gave Rhodes a five-year contract extension worth $70 million. Once a cornerstone player in their secondary, Rhodes struggled significantly in 2019, and the Minnesota defense has continued to take several steps back since their run to the 2017 NFC Championship Game.

RELATED: Robby Anderson Signs Two-Year, $20 Million Contract With Panthers

Rhodes wasn't the only standout on Minnesota's defense that the team parted ways with this offseason. Pass rushing stud Everson Griffen and two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Linval Joseph were released. The Vikings also decided not to retain Trae Waynes, who signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Colts have been one of the busiest teams this offseason. Before signing Rhodes, they landed Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers on a one-year deal worth $25 million. They also traded for San Francisco 49ers pass rushing star DeForest Buckner, surrendering their 2020 first-round pick in the deal.

After reaching the postseason in 2018, the Colts regressed and finish a disappointing 7-9 in the AFC South. Losing star quarterback Andrew Luck to retirement in August was a big blow to their championship hopes. But with Rivers and a revamped defense leading the way, the Colts can expect to compete for a postseason spot again, and they could very well reemerge as a title contender.

PowerColor Extends Product Warranty by Three Months Due to Coronavirus

PowerColor this week has announced that it is extending its warranties to existing customers by three months. The second manufacturer this month to extend its existing prodcut warranties, PowerColor is making the extension due to the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus global pandemic and all of the resulting lockdown-related restrictions on non-essential shipping.

With the novel Coronavirus affecting many daily aspects of life and industry, provisions of basic necessities are being prioritized over items classified as non-essential. With more emphasis on much of the world focused on remaining at home during these times, PowerColor has announced a three-month warranty extension program for customers whose warranties were due to expire in the next few months (March to June 2020).

The brief announcement from PowerColor doesn't specify which products would benefit from this three-month warranty extension, but it is likely to stretch across its entire product portfolio. The most notable products in PowerColor portfolio are its AMD Radeon graphics cards with aftermarket coolers. With delays on shipping likely due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, as well as workplace restrictions in place, this is beneficial to users currently in the process of an RMA.

The official statement from PowerColor reads:

"With the global crisis of COVID-19, we understand that these are critical times for everyone. This has impacted all aspects of our lives, and we understand that during these times, priorities are placed on more health-concerned matters. Many in the process of RMAs may find difficulty in shipping out cards for repair or service at this time, so we will be adding a 3-month extension to customers with warranties expiring between March through June 2020. PowerColor remains committed to deliver great products and services to our customers, and want to assure that we will continue to do so during these trying times.

Wishing health and safety for all The PowerColor team."

Micron to Launch HBM2 DRAM This Year: Finally

Bundled in their latest earnings call, Micron has revealed that later this year the company will finally introduce its first HBM DRAM for bandwidth-hungry applications. The move will enable the company to address the market for high-bandwidth devices such as flagship GPUs and network processors, which in the last five years have turned to HBM to meet their ever-growing bandwidth needs. And as the third and final of the "big three" memory manufacturers to enter the HBM market, this means that HBM2 memory will finally be available from all three companies, introducing a new wrinkle of competition into that market.

Overall, while Micron has remained on the cutting-edge of memory technologies, the company has been noticeably absent from HBM thus far. Previous efforts have instead focused on GDDR5X, as well as a different take on wide-and-slow memory with Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC). First announced back in 2011 as a joint effort with  Samsung and IBM, HMC was a similar stacked DRAM type for bandwidth hungry applications, which featured a low-width bus & extremely high data rates to offer memory bandwidth that by far exceeded that of then-standard DDR3. As a competing solution to HBM, HMC did see some usage in the market, particularly in products like accelerators and supercomputers. Ultimately, however, HMC lost the battle against more widespread HBM/HBM2 and Micron folded the project in 2018 in favor of GDDR6 and HBM.

In the end, is has taken Micron around two years to develop its first HBM2 memory devices, and these will finally become available in 2020. Given the broad, financial nature of the call, Micron isn't disclosing the specifications of its first HBM2 devices at this time, though it is a safe bet that the underlying DRAM cells will be produced using the company’s 2nd or 3rd Generation 10 nm-class process technologies (1y or 1z). Meanwhile, Micron will obviously do its best to be competitive against Samsung and SK Hynix both in terms of performance and capacity.

Sanjay Mehrotra, president and chief executive officer, had the following to say:

“In FQ2, we began sampling 1Z-based DDR5 modules and are on track to introduce high-bandwidth memory in calendar 2020. We are also making good progress on our 1-alpha node.”
