The iPhone 12 & 12 Pro Review: New Design and Diminishing Returns

The new iPhone 12’s have been out for a while now, and while we’ve had our hands on them for a few weeks, Apple’s news bombardment of the new Apple Silicon announcement and release of new Apple M1 Mac devices has meant the iPhones have had to be put on the back burner for a little while.

Having already covered Apple’s new A14 architecture in-depth in our coverage of the M1, it’s time to fill in the missing pieces for the actual new generation of iPhones.

The new iPhone 12 generation of devices mark a new design restart for Apple, moving away from the design that had been started with the iPhone X in late 2017. Re-gaining the flat side-frame look that was originally found in past iPhone generations of the 4, 4S, 5 & 5S series, Apple is making the old new again.

The new iPhone 12 series is also Apple’s widest range release ever, with a total of four new iPhones: the iPhone 12 mini, a new compact form-factor at the lower range, the iPhone 12, the “standard” iPhone part, and continuing to offer the Pro models in the form of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. We’ll be focusing on the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro for today’s review.

David Prowse, Who Played Darth Vader, Dies at 85 | TheRichest.com

The man behind the Darth Vader mask in the first three Star Wars films, English actor David Prowse, died on Saturday after a short illness at 85. Although most fans recognize James Earl Jones' voice as Vader’s, it was Prowse, a champion weightlifter and bodybuilder who stood 6-foot-7, that wore the villain’s costume.

On Twitter, Bowington Management announced his passing with "great regret and heart-wrenching sadness for us and million of fans around the world." The actor, who also played Frankenstein in three films: the James Bond parody Casino Royale (1967), The Horror of Frankenstein (1970) and Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974), appeared in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971) as the manservant of author Frank Alexander (Patrick Magee).

Behind the scenes, he helped Christopher Reeve bulk up for the Superman films. Prowse was a household name in the UK for portraying the Green Cross Code Man, a superhero in PSAs that taught children to cross the street safely from 1967 through 1990. For his service, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2000. "It's one of the greatest things I've ever done," he said of the role.

Born on July 1, 1935, in Bristol, England, Prowse was misdiagnosed with tuberculosis of the knee and wore a leg splint for four years as a child. Despite his difficult start in life, he went on to compete for the Mr. Universe bodybuilding title in 1960 before winning the British weightlifting championship for three years in a row from 1962-64. His first roles included appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies, The Saint and Doctor Who, as well as in a toy commercial, The Mighty Tonka, which was directed by Ridley Scott.

His role in A Clockwork Orange led George Lucas to offer him a part in the first Star Wars (1977). "Lucas said to me, 'You've got a choice of two characters in the movie," Prowse said in a 2016 interview. "He said, 'There's a character called Chewbacca, which is like a huge teddy bear, or alternatively, there's the main villain in the piece.' Well, there's no choice, is there? Thank you very much, I'll have the villain's piece."

Prowse was married in 1963 to Norma Scammell and had three children. In October 2017, he announced that he was retiring and would no longer make public appearances.

Delivery Driver Who Appears To have Stolen Boy's PS5 Dumped By Amazon

Sony's newly-released PlayStation 5 seems the most sought-out piece of property in the world at the moment. The next-gen console dropped earlier this month but stock has been limited and even folks who preordered have experienced difficulty landing their systems.

The manufacturers have promised to make more units available for the holidays but, while the wait persists, there have been several reports of delivery companies swindling Amazon customers. Some folks in the UK have reported getting Foreman Grills and other items - even cat food - in their packaging instead of the console they ordered.

Related: Sony Confident PS5 Will Sell Better Than PS4

Others have reported seeing drivers stop outside of their houses only to drive off without delivering their PS5s. Jenni Walker of Oxfordshire in the UK bought her 16-year-old son a PS5 for his birthday - he turned 16 on the day the console launched in England. The teenager would have had quite the blast on his special day, however, CCTV footage caught the delivery man driving away without delivering the PS5 after having delivered other packages.

The camera caught the unnamed driver putting a large box back into his van and then driving off.

Walker's family brought this up to Amazon, who assured them the matter would be investigated. Her money was ultimately refunded and Jenni received a £50 gift voucher for her trouble. Of course, that seems pretty low when one considers how difficult it will be to get another PS5, but it's significantly better than the £5 she was initially offered.

While Jenni did not want the driver to get in trouble, for some odd reason, her husband wasn't as forgiving and made the footage public.

Walker's daughter personally drove down to the local Amazon depot and showed them the CCTV footage. The person in charge confirmed the driver was part of his staff and said he would be fired.

"We have very high standards for our delivery service providers and how they serve customers," Amazon said to the Oxford Mail on Thursday. "The delivery associate will no longer be delivering on behalf of Amazon."

The retailers have promised to do right by everyone who's experienced something similar where the PlayStation 5 is concerned.

As for the Walker family, they're currently scouring the internet in search of another console.

Superman & Lois Actor Offers First Look At Clarke Kent's 2 Sons

Fans have gotten a sneak peek at Superman and Lois's sons, thanks to actor Birsie Tulloch sharing a behind-the-scenes photo on social media this week. Tulloch joined the Arrowverse as Lois Lane in 2018 and will stay true to the role for the upcoming Superman & Lois show set to drop in 2021.

The show, starring Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, details Clark Kent and Lois Lane's life as the parents of two teenage boys while they attempt to juggle parenthood with fighting evil in Smallville.

Previously: George Clooney Says He Was "Terrible" And "Sucked" In "Batman & Robin"

Jordan Elsass and Alexander Gardin are set to play the couple's sons Jonathan and Jordan. Initial teaser images did not offer much and the teenagers have so far been left out of promotional material. Tulloch, though, gave a bit of a preview via a tweet on Wednesday.

The photo, shown right below, shows Hoechlin, Eslass, and Garfin on the other end of a viewfinder getting ready to shoot on set. This is the first look fans have been offered as far as the Kal-El's sons are concerned.

Jordan and Jonathan are reported to have big roles on the upcoming show. There's no confirmation as to whether they've inherited Clarke's powers or have any special abilities based on their Kryptonian heritage. However, there's a running theory that only one of them will be blessed with superpowers.

Superman & Lois will premiere on The CW in February - unless, of course, there are delays - and is one of the most anticipated inbound shows. It has seen some controversy following a writer getting fired after accusing the showrunners of sexism and refusing to make Jonathan and Martha Kent more diverse. In spite of this, things remain on schedule for a 2021 debut.

Apple Looking To Move iPad & MacBook Manufacturing From China To Vietnam

Apple is looking to move some of its manufacturing labor for the iPad and MacBook from China to Vietnam, according to a report from Reuters, who claims the company has asked Foxconn to fashion a transition.

Production is supposed to kick off in Foxconn's Bac Giang province next year but it's understood that Apple wants to diversify its supply chain as a result of the ongoing dispute between the U.S and China over trade.

Previously: Twitter Is Considering The Addition Of A Dislike Button

The publication didn't specify as to the models of the aforementioned devices the company wants to be made in Vietnam, nor were they able to provide details over the proportion of production it wants out of China.

"The development comes as the outgoing administration of U.S. President Donald Trump encourages U.S. firms to shift production out of China. During Trump’s tenure, the United States has targeted made-in-China electronics for higher import tariffs, and restricted supplies of components produced using U.S. technology to Chinese firms it deems a national security risk. Taiwanese manufacturers, wary of being caught up in the tit-for-tat trade war, have moved or are considering moving some production from China to countries such as Vietnam, Mexico and India."

“The move was requested by Apple,” a source with knowledge on the matter told Reuters. “It wants to diversify production following the trade war.”

“As a matter of company policy, and for reasons of commercial sensitivity, we do not comment on any aspect of our work for any customer or their products," Foxconn said.

Should the move occur, it wouldn't mark the first time Apple products were produced in Vietnam. Apple started making the AirPods Pro there earlier this year. India has also operated as a hub for the assembly of various iPhone models for some time now. The latter relationship was formed before the trade war between the U.S and China but does help Apple meet local import regulations.

According to Nikkei, Foxconn is planning to invest $270 million in Vietnam to expand manufacturing capacity at locations within the country as it's poised to move over 30 percent of its production lines outside China.

Taiwan's Compal Electronics and China's BYD Electronic International Co Ltd are also among companies that assemble iPads in Asia.

Writer Joe Russo Reveals Production On Extraction 2 Will Begin next Year

Netflix's Extraction proved to be quite a hit when it dropped earlier this year. The film, starring Chris Hemsworth, was adapted from Andre Parks' novel, Cuidad, and details the ordeal mercenary for hire Tyler Rake is put through as he tries to fight his way through Bangladesh in an attempt to get the son of a drug dealer to safety.

The movie ended with a huge question mark, with Hemsworth's Rake character getting shot right after finishing the job. Whether he succumbed to the wound or not is left to the imagination but, fortunately, a sequel has been greenlit.

Previously: Here's Why Endgame Writers Didn't Want To Kill Thor

Extraction 2 is in the works and, according to writer Joe Russo, will head into production at some point in 2021. While Hemsworth will reprise the role of Tyler Rake, we can't say for sure he survived as Russo refused to be drawn into revealing whether the events in the upcoming movie take place before or after the 2020 release. It appears he wasn't sure which direction it would go in himself.

"We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time," Russo noted in May after confirming he would be taking charge of the writing.

Speaking to Collider back in May, the writer revealed Netflix was excited to get the ball rolling on a second part having expressed delight over Extraction's reception.

Following several months of silence on the sequel's progress, Russo spoke to ComicBook.com this week and indicated the film is likely to go into production in 2021. At least that's the intention.

"We're in the script phase right now but we're hoping to shoot that sometime next year," he said. "And then you know, say I'm super excited, Hemsworth's super excited, Netflix is excited so it's really just a function of getting the script done."

Russo didn't divulge anything where the plot or location are concerned and the uncertainty over whether scripting will move forward or backward still looms. It appears we'll just have to wait for Extraction 2, but we can continue to imagine Rake surviving his potentially fatal gunshot wound.

AMD EPYC Rome in (Deep) Mini-ITX? ASRock Rack's New ROMED4ID-2T

ASRock Rack has unveiled its latest small form factor motherboard designed for AMD's EYPC processors, the ROMED4ID-2T. It is based on a new proprietary form factor similar to Mini-ITX, affectionally colloquialized as 'Deep' Mini-ITX, which is slightly larger than standard mini-ITX. The board supports for EPYC Rome 7002 processors up to 64 cores.

Being able to amalgamate up to 64 cores with a mini-ITX motherboard isn't a small feat; the ROMED4ID-2T does it for users looking to build a server with a small overall footprint. This model opts for a new wider proprietary design, the 'deep mini-ITX' form factor with dimensions of 6.7 x 8.2 inches, rather than 6.7-inch square for regular mini-ITX.

The main obvious limitation with such a small motherboard size and a large socket is that not all of the features of the processor is made available - there are some sacrifices to put it all in. That starts with the memory support, with this model only having four memory slots, and therefore four memory channels, rather than the standard eight channels that EPYC Rome can provide. The other is PCIe 4.0 support - there is one PCIe 4.0 x16 full length slot, and six Slimline PCIe 4.0 x8 ports, but that is still far fewer than the 128 lanes this CPU can provide.

For storage devices, other than the single M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot, there is plenty to accommodate multiple drives, despite the size limitations, with up to sixteen SATA ports support from two of the Slimline ports, which ASRock states can be configured within the BIOS. This also includes support for bulk U.2 storage, with two Slimline ports operating at PCIe 4.0 x8 or eight SATA ports, and the other four Slimline simply listed as being PCIe 4.0 x8 only.

Being primarily marketed as a server-focused model, it includes many of the usual suspects regarding internal headers, including one for IPMB, PMBus, and a 13-pin LPC TPM header. There are also three 4-pin fan headers, each with its own fan fail LED.

Regarding connectivity, the ASRock Rack ROMED4ID-2T includes an Intel X550-AT2 10 Gb controller, which adds two 10 GbE ports on the rear panel, as well as a dedicated Realtek RTL8211E Ethernet port for the board's IPMI. A single DB15 D-Sub video output is present for users looking to access the system psychically over the IPMI, with a UID LED button and a pair of USB 3.2 G1 Type-A ports.

At present, ASRock hasn't given any information regarding pricing or availability, but we expect to hear something shortly.

Mikhail Sergachev Signs Three-Year, $14.4 million Extension With Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning have finally re-signed one of their top three major RFAs.

On Wednesday, the Lightning announced that they have signed young defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year contract worth $14.4 million (a $4.8 million average annual value).

Sergachev was instrumental in helping the Lightning win the 2020 Stanley Cup following years of playoff heartbreak. The 22-year-old had 10 goals (a career best) and 34 points in 70 regular season games.

Sergachev elevated his play in the postseason, recording three goals and seven assists in 25 games. His offensive skills and strong defensive game helped Tampa Bay form a stingy defence in front of world-class goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy.

For his career, Sergachev has 25 goals and 106 points in 228 NHL games while averaging 17:41 minutes of ice time.

The Lightning acquired Sergachev - the ninth overall pick in the 2016 Entry Draft - from the Montreal Canadiens in 2017 as part of the blockbuster Jonathan Drouin trade.

With Sergachev re-signed, general manager Julien BriseBois can now turn his focus over to the other two RFAs: Defenceman Erik Cernak and standout two-way forward Anthony Cirelli.

The Lightning are up against the cap, and in order to re-sign both Cernak and Cirelli, BriseBois will likely have to move out an expensive player or two.

RELATED: [Report] 48 Games Is "The Absolute Minimum" For 2020-21 NHL Regular Season Schedule

Forwards Tyler Johnson (a $5 million cap hit for four more years), Ondrej Palat ($5.3 million for two more years) and Yanni Gourde ($5.166 million cap hit for two more years) look like possible trade candidates.

But the good news is that the Lightning have the majority of their core players signed: Sergachev, Vasilevskiy, captain Steven Stamkos, elite defenceman Victor Hedman, 2019 Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov and rising superstar Brayden Point.

Having too many key contributors is a good problem to have, and it'll be interesting to see how BriseBois works his way out of a tough cap situation. The Sergachev deal is done with, and now comes the hard part in extending both Cernak and Cirelli.

New Enterprise SSD Controllers From Silicon Motion, Phison, FADU

In the past month, three SSD controller designers have announced new enterprise NVMe SSD controllers, bringing a wave of new competition to the high-end enterprise/datacenter SSD market. FADU is a relative newcomer to the market, having only released one previous SSD controller. Silicon Motion and Phison are both very familiar competitors, but they have been most successful with their client/consumer SSD controllers; they have been stepping up their enterprise controller efforts in recent years, but gaining ground in that market has been a slow process.

All three companies are now touting a new generation of enterprise NVMe SSD controllers that are more modern and mature. The three companies are poised to compete not just against each other, but against companies like Microchip/Microsemi and Marvell, who have a much longer track record of success in the enterprise SSD controller market.

Most of the major NAND flash memory manufacturers now use in-house controller designs for their enterprise and datacenter SSDs. Independent SSD controller designers sell to second-tier SSD brands, and also commonly sell directly to hyperscale cloud providers that are cutting out the middle-man. The business models in this market are quite flexible: customers may take just the controller ASIC and develop their own firmware, use turnkey or custom firmware developed by the controller vendor, or start from a reference design for the entire SSD and customize as needed. For the quickest time to market, some controller vendors will even arrange contract manufacturing of SSDs on behalf of their customers.

Silicon Motion SM8266 Controller

Silicon Motion's new enterprise NVMe controller is the SM8266, a 16-channel design with a PCIe 4 x4 host interface.

Silicon Motion's first enterprise NVMe controller was the SM2270. That had a bit of an odd design: it essentially combined two 8-channel controllers onto one chip behind a shared PCIe front-end supporting PCIe 3 x8. This allowed Silicon Motion to re-use a lot of the design of their very successful 8-channel client/consumer NVMe controllers while easily scaling up to a 16-channel solution. Silicon Motion hasn't shared a block diagram for the new SM8266, but we suspect they're still using a similar split design since the SM8266 spec sheet mentions dual 32-bit DRAM interfaces.

The SM8266 uses the same 21mmx21mm package as the SM2270 but drops support for an x8 host interface—PCIe 4 x4 is plenty fast. The NAND interface now supports speeds up to 1200MT/s, the same as their recently-released SM2267 mainstream consumer NVMe controller, but a step behind the 1600MT/s supported by their upcoming SM2264 high-end consumer NVMe controller (both 8-channel designs).  The DRAM interface on the SM8266 supports DDR4 and LPDDR3 at faster speeds than the SM2270, but again is lagging behind their latest consumer NVMe controllers that support LPDDR4(X).

The SM8266 supports up to 128 IO queues and optional NVMe features like Controller Memory Buffer (CMB) and up to 32 namespaces. Additionally, Silicon Motion can provide firmware implementing an Open Channel SSD interface or Key-Value SSD interface. Open Channel support was a major highlight of the SM2270, which was developed primarily for Alibaba's use. However, most industry interest in Open Channel SSDs has moved on to the newer NVMe Zoned Namespaces standard.

The Silicon Motion SM8266 is available as a turnkey solution of the controller and firmware with SSD hardware reference designs. Silicon Motion's subsidiary Shannon Systems is using the SM8266 in drives for hyperscale customers, expected to go into production in 2021.

Phison FX Series SSDs

The new Phison FX is a bit different from their previous enterprise/datacenter solutions, which have been -DC variants of their client/consumer SSD controllers. The Phison FX Series is a family of SSD reference designs, using a new controller that has not been separately named. The FX Series SSDs are U.2 15mm drives using 96L 3D TLC, with firmware that can be customized to suit the features required by each customer. The FX's controller is a 12-channel design—the widest Phison has ever put out—but the host interface is still just PCIe 3 x4. Despite the older PCIe gen3 host interface, the Phison FX uses their fourth-generation LDPC engine, the same as used in their E16 PCIe gen4 consumer SSD controller. Overall, it's a clear step up from their 8-channel E12DC controller solution, but this is definitely the most conservative of the three new controller designs. However, that also means it is quick to market: Phison has already started shipping these drives.

Phison Enterprise/Datacenter NVMe SSD Solutions
  FX Series E12DC
Host Interface PCIe 3 x4 PCIe 3 x4
NAND Channels 12 8
Sequential Read 3400 MB/s 3200 MB/s

FADU Delta SSDs with FC4121 Controller

FADU is a fairly new SSD controller design firm, having been founded in 2015 and launched their first controller ASIC (FC3081) in 2018. This year, they are launching their second controller, the FC4121. The new controller moves to PCIe 4.0, widens the flash interface from 8 to 12 channels and increases the supported speeds from 800MT/s to 1200MT/s—which means the FC4121 can use almost all the extra bandwidth offered by the faster PCIe host interface.

FADU Enterprise/Datacenter NVMe SSD Controllers
  FC4121 FC3081

4KB Random Write IOPS 450k 230k
Performance based on 28% OP 3 DWPD using SK hynix 128L TLC

FADU's SSD controller architecture was the first to use RISC-V processor cores, with their previous FC3081 "Annapurna" controller featuring SiFive's S51 cores. The controller architecture also features a variety of special-purpose hardware offloads to improve power efficiency and QoS. FADU's firmware can support a wide range of the more advanced optional NVMe features, including Controller Memory Buffer (CMB), Persistent Memory Region (PMR), SR-IOV virtualization, IO Determinism and Zoned Namespaces.

FADU provides their DELTA reference SSD designs based around the FC4121 controller, with both U.2 and EDSFF E1.S designs and firmware customization available. These designs are available either for customers to manufacture themselves, or customers can provide the NAND and FADU will arrange contract manufacturing of the private label SSDs.

Best Gaming Laptops: Holiday 2020

Along with our quarterly laptop guide, near the end of every year we also like to take a look at the state of the gaming laptop market. With a much more cyclical upgrade cycle, gaming laptops tend to evolve in lockstep with the major components inside them. For the gaming laptop market, this includes not only more powerful CPUs, but also more unique (for a laptop) components like discrete video cards, mechanical keyboards, and perhaps an IPS panel or high-refresh TN display. All of which come together to make a breed of laptop that is very different from the kinds of machines that define the mainstream and professional markets.

Seattle Seahawks Won't Have Fans In Attendance For Their Next Two Home Games

The Seattle Seahawks haven't had any fans at Lumen Field this season, and that isn't about to change.

In a statement, the Seahawks announced that they won't have any fans in attendance for their Week 13 and Week 14 home games against the New York Giants and New York Jets, respectively, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout the United States.

The Seahawks have three home games remaining on the schedule. The final game at Lumen Field takes place against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17 on Dec.27, but the team hasn't made a final decision on possibly allowing fans.

All 32 NFL teams have had either an extremely limited capacity or no fans in attendance for their 2020 home games.

The Seahawks have been one of the NFL's most dominant teams at home under head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson, thanks in large part to the thundering and noisy atmosphere referred to as "the 12th man"

Even though the Seahawks haven't had any fans in attendance this year, it hasn't stopped them from continuing to rack up the wins at home. The Seahawks are 5-0 at Lumen Field here in 2020, with four of those wins decided by seven points or less.

RELATED:[Report] NFL Could Lose $2.7 Billion Over Reduced Fan Attendance For 2020

Seattle surprisingly struggled at home last season, going an uncharacteristic 4-4 with losses to the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.

But they've returned to dominance at home this season, and with a 7-3 record, they're very much alive for the top seed and lone first-round bye in the NFC. Seattle is tied with the Los Angeles Rams for the NFC West division lead.

The Seahawks have only missed the postseason once in the Wilson era (2017), and they've yet to record a losing season. Barring an unexpected unraveling in the second half, Seattle will be back in the playoffs come January.
