Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island, Passes Away At 82

Actress Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann Summers on the classic CBS sitcom Gilligan's Island, passed away Wednesday morning in Los Angeles at 82 of causes related to COVID-19, her publicist announced. Wells, along with Tina Louise, was the last surviving member of the show’s cast.

Gilligan's Island, which ran from 1964 to 1967, became known to generations through syndication. The story of three women and four men stranded on a desert island after a three-hour boat tour went off course struck a chord for those looking for escapism during the tumultuous sixties and seventies.

The other castaways included Gilligan (Bob Denver); the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.); millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife, Lovey (Natalie Schafer); the Professor (Russell Johnson); and Hollywood starlet Ginger Grant (Louise).

After the announcement of Wells’ passing, Louise tweeted, "I will always remember Dawn's kindness to me. We shared in creating a cultural landmark that has continued to bring comfort and smiles to people during this difficult time. I hope that people will remember her the way that I do — always with a smile on her face."

In August 2018, Wells found herself in dire straits after falling and being unable to cover her hospital bills. Luckily, fans came to the rescue after a friend created a GoFundMe page and raised $197,000. "I am amazed at the kindness and affection I have received. I don't know how this happened. I thought I was taking all the proper steps to ensure my golden years. Now, here I am, no family, no husband, no kids and no money," she said at the time.

Wells said the "values and principles" of Mary Ann were her own. "I know this because the core of Mary Ann is really me. I mean, I built her from scratch … if you play a character long enough on stage or screen, I think your true self shows through," she said. "There hasn't been a Mary Ann on the air for I don't know how long. There hasn't been a good girl over 14, and Mary Ann was very much that."

Born in Reno, Nevada, on October 18, 1938, Well’s father was a real estate developer and her mom a homemaker. "My parents divorced when I was four, but I did not grow up in a broken home," Wells wrote in her autobiography. "I was raised by a very good mother and a great dad."

She was crowned Miss Nevada in 1959 and competed in the 1960 Miss America pageant. Soon after, she graduated with a degree in theater arts from the University of Washington. She began her career on TV shows like Wagon TrainMaverick, 77 Sunset Strip and Bonanza. After Gilligan's Island was canceled, she appeared on The Wild Wild West, ALF and other series. She was also featured in the cult horror films The Town That Dreaded Sundown in 1976 and Return to Boggy Creek in 1977.

Buffalo Bills Will Have Up To 6,700 For Home Wild Card Playoff Game

The Buffalo Bills are set to take part in their first home playoff game in 24 years. And for the first time in 2020, they'll be allowed to hold a limited numbers of fans at Bills Stadium.

On Wednesday, the Bills announced that they have received permission from New York State to welcome up to 6,700 fans for their home Wild Card Playoff game (either Jan. 9 or 10, opponent to be determined).

In the statement, the Bills announced that negative COVID-19 tests will be mandatory for fans who wish to attend the game. Masks will also be required.

The Bills sit at 12-3. They will either finish as the No. 2 or 3 seed in the AFC.

A win against the Miami Dolphins - or a Pittsburgh Steelers' loss to the Cleveland Browns -  on Sunday will clinch Buffalo the second seed. A Bills loss and a Steelers victory would bump Buffalo down to the No. 3 seed, and Pittsburgh up to the second.

Buffalo has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Pittsburgh thanks to their Week 14 win.

The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the top seed in the AFC with a Week 16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. They'll rest starter Patrick Mahomes for their Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans enter Week 17 with identical 10-5 records. Three of them will earn a wild card spot, and the Titans or Colts will win the AFC South.

As such, the Bills and Steelers don't know who they'll play in the Wild Card Round just yet.

The Bills' last home playoff game was against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1996 AFC Wild Card Round. The Jaguars upset Buffalo by a final score of 30-27, and the Bills wouldn't play another home playoff game for the next 23 years.

It's been a long time coming for Bills fans, who will finally get to enjoy playoff football in Buffalo come the Jan. 9-10 weekend.

Chrissy Teigen Says She Has Been Sober For Four Weeks

In an Instagram comment, Chrissy Teigen revealed that she’s been sober for four weeks. After sharing a video of herself dancing around during her family's Christmas visit to St. Barts, fans celebrated that the model and influencer was doing much better after suffering a deeply painful stillbirth in September.

In the video, Teigen can be seen hilariously dancing to the classic song "Good Morning" from the 1952 musical Singing In the Rain. In response, one fan jokingly wrote, "I need whatever drugs you're on." Teigen, who has been open about her past struggles with alcohol abuse, answered that she's "4 weeks sober," along with some pink heart and prayer hands emojis.

Fans responded to her comment with congratulations. In 2017, Teigen told Cosmopolitan that she struggled to " just have one drink" at social events. "I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show, and then a bunch at the awards show." she said.

"Then I felt bad for making kind of an a** of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there's just nothing like that," she added. "You feel horrible. It's not a good look for me, for [husband] John [Legend], for anybody."

Although she said that she was never confronted about her alcohol consumption, she didn’t feel right about it. "They just assumed that it was OK because I always felt OK the next morning. People think it's cutesy and fun to go on these boozy brunches, but there's more to it. I've never once been like, 'I'm sure glad I had that boozy brunch!'" she added.

One of her attempts at sobriety was on a trip to Bali when she chose to abstain from drinking. The experience was a revelation. "I would wake up feeling amazing. My skin felt amazing. I was just so happy," she said.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Say 'Love Wins' In Holiday Podcast

In their first podcast on Spotify, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say they hope it brings "warmth, a smile and something to think about" to listeners at the end of a dreadful year. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex started the podcast by thanking "health care workers and front care workers for their sacrifices," and sharing a greeting from Elton John, who is in quarantine with his family.

Matt Haig, author of "Notes on a Nervous Planet," a book admired by the couple, spoke about his own struggles during lockdown. Other guests included Tyler Perry, Stacey Abrams, José Andrés, Brené Brown, Deepak Chopra, James Cordon, Elton John, and Naomi Osaka. Perry spoke about feeding 5,000 families for Thanksgiving but regretted he couldn’t help more.

Meghan shared a personal message, saying, "From us, I'll say no matter what life throws at you guys, trust us when we say, love wins," while Harry added, "Love always wins. As we all know, it's been a year." The couple wanted the podcast "to honor the compassion and kindness that has helped so many people get through it."

Harry called 2020 "a year we could have never imagined," and talked about the lessons he’s learned in the past year, saying, "As we come to the end of this year and look to the future, let's hold onto the lessons we've learned about how important it is to take care of one another, and how meaningful our connections are, even when they're physically impossible."

The couple's one-year-old son, Archie, made an appearance at the end of the podcast when his mom asked him, "Archie, is it fun?" He adorably answered, "Fun. Happy New Year" The podcast ended with the song "This Little Light of MIne," which was played at the end of their wedding.

The couple will release a series of podcasts in 2021. Earlier this month, Spotify announced they had signed a multi-project deal with Archewell Audio, the couple's podcast production company.

NCIS Extends Production Hiatus Following COVID-19 Surge

Numerous CBS Studios shows, including NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Seal Team, Why Women Kill and Diary of a Future President, have decided to extend their production hiatus until January 11 in light of the COVID-19 surge in Los Angeles County.

CBS Studios is so far the only major studio to delay production amid the pandemic, which has progressively worsened in California. On Monday, Los Angeles County recorded 13,661 new cases and 73 deaths. In total, the state registered a new high of 66,811 COVID-19 cases at the beginning of the week.

RELATED: LA Public Health Director Blasts Kirk Cameron’s For Promoting Caroling During Pandemic

Meanwhile, Netflix, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Television Group have not made any decisions regarding production delays. CBS Studios made the decision after the county emailed industry heads suggesting a delay in production given the “catastrophic surge” in COVID-19 cases, stating that production travel is “currently not advised.”

“Although music, TV and film productions are allowed to operate, we ask you to strongly consider pausing work for a few weeks during this catastrophic surge in COVID cases,” wrote public health department representatives. “Identify and delay higher risk activities, and focus on lower-risk work for now, if at all possible.”

Despite attempts by television studios to implement safety measures, a number of productions have reported COVID-19 cases in November and December. On the set of Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, several crew members who tested positive for COVID-19 protested producers claims that there was no evidence of transmission at work, despite recording nearly 20 positive cases.

Other productions that have reported COVID-19 cases include Why Women Kill, Call Your Mother, Mr. Mayor, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Colin in Black & White, Impeachment: American Crime Story, Young Sheldon, The Kominsky Method and Lucifer.

So far, there have been 19,977,704 confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States and 346,579 deaths. There are currently nearly 8,000,000 active cases across the country. Two proven COVID-19 vaccines are now being administered across the US. Nearly 2 million people have already received the first of two doses of these vaccines, and officials hope to immunize one-third of the US population by the end of March 2021.

Welsh Actor Michael Sheen Returns OBE | TheRichest.com

Welsh actor Michael Sheen has returned his Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor given to him by Queen Elizabeth due to his opposition to the monarchy. The actor, who received the OBE in 2009 for services to drama, objects to the practice of bestowing the title of Prince of Wales to the heir apparent to the English throne.

In an online interview, Sheen said he decided it would be hypocritical to keep the honor after considering the history of Wales and its centuries-old practice of simply handing the title of Prince of Wales to the heir apparent to the English throne.

RELATED: Prince Harry Pays UK Taxpayers Back $3.1 Million Spent On Home Renovations

"In my research to do that lecture, I learned a lot about Welsh history," Sheen said. "I remember sitting there going, 'well I have a choice - I either don't give this lecture and hold on to my OBE or I give this lecture and I have to give my OBE back'."

The royal title was created by King Edward I and given to his son in 1301 following the conquest of Wales. Sheen believes “it would be a “really meaningful and powerful gesture for that title to no longer be held in the same way as it has before, that would be an incredibly meaningful thing I think to happen” if the honor was no longer handed down to the heir apparent.

The 51-year-old actor, who played Tony Blair in The Queen, added, "I didn't mean any disrespect but I just realized I'd be a hypocrite if I said the things I was going to say in the lecture about the nature of the relationship between Wales and the British state."

Prince William, the current Duke of Cambridge, will inherit the title Prince of Wales if his father Charles accedes to the English throne. Charles' problematic relationship with Wales is shown in season three of the Netflix series The Crown.

Sheen isn’t the first artist to refuse a royal honor. John Lennon, Paul Weller, David Bowie, Danny Boyle, Ken Loach and John Cleese have also done so.

NFL's Three Saturday Week 16 Games Drew Excellent Viewership Numbers

The NFL had three games on Boxing Day, and they all produced excellent viewership numbers.

According to NFL Media, the San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals drew an estimated audience of 11.2 million viewers on Prime Video with Twitch.

NFL Media also reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Detroit Lions afternoon game on NFL Network had a viewership of 6.3 million.

The Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders evening game was also "the most-watched" NFL Network exclusive game of the season. Finally, NFL Network was reportedly the most-watched network on Boxing day, per NFL Media.

One day earlier, the New Orleans Saints hosted the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Day. That game drew a reportedly drew 20.6 million viewers (television and digital platforms).

The first Saturday game saw the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers soundly defeat the Detroit Lions 47-7. The Bucs pulled Brady at halftime after they built a giant 34-0 halftime lead. In just two quarters, Brady finished with 348 passing yards and four touchdowns.

The second game between the 49ers and Cardinals was much closer. Third-string quarterback C.J. Beathard and backup running back Jeff Wilson led the way on offense, while San Francisco's stingy defense kept Kyler Murray and the Cardinals in check.

San Francisco pulled of a close 20-12 victory, which put a serious dent in Arizona's playoff hopes. The Cardinals need a win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17 - or a Chicago Bears loss to the Green Bay Packers - to qualify for the postseason.

The final game saw the Dolphins barely get past the Raiders by a final score of 26-25. The game saw five scores in the final 4:01, and Miami pulled off a thrilling last-second comeback on Jason Sanders' game-winning field goal.

With the victory, the Dolphins moved to 10-5 on the year. A victory against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17 will help Miami clinch its first playoff berth in four years, and just their third dating back to 2002.

LA Public Health Director Blasts Kirk Cameron’s For Promoting Caroling During Pandemic

Actor Kirk Cameron, known for his religious fervor, has been encouraging people to go out caroling this holiday season without observing COVID-19 protocols. On Tuesday, the actor participated in a demonstration in the parking lot of the Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer decried Cameron’s behavior as “very irresponsible and very dangerous,” noting that people should be wearing masks, socially distancing and only leaving home for essential tasks.

RELATED: Couple Play Santa & Mrs. Claus At Party Before Testing Positive For COVID-19

“Honestly, we get so many reports of these events, and I’m at a loss of words at this point,” she added. “I don’t really understand it. ... It’s unnecessary. We’re in the middle of a pandemic. These are just extraordinary times. We all need to help each other live through these times."

The Pfizer vaccine, which is now being distributed among healthcare workers, won’t be available to the general public for some time. “It will take us months to get everyone vaccinated. We won’t be in the same place next year. And I think all of us need to be able to act with kindness, care and compassion for those around us — both for those we know and love, and those that other people know and love,” Ferrer said.

Last Thursday, California became the first state to surpass two million coronavirus cases. Cameron, however, maintains that caroling is “a chance for people to come sing songs of hope” amid “devastation” in his community, despite COVID-19 now being the leading cause of death in the United States.

Cameron’s former Growing Pains costar and onscreen sister Tracey Gold let the actor know that she disapproved of his actions, tweeting, “As your more intelligent sister I want you to know that I disapprove. I’m worried about you brother AND your family. Wear a mask. Stay home. Sing later.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, Cameron’s actual sister, Full House star Candace Cameron Bure, tweeted, “I did not attend any recent caroling events. Also, I choose to follow the greater guidelines by wearing a mask and social distance when I’m in public. However, I don’t appreciate the vile tweets about my family. I believe respectful dialogue is the key to being heard. Stay safe.”

Tom Cruise Returns To Mission: Impossible 7 Set After Going Ballistic

After losing it on his crew, Tom Cruise is returning to the Mission: Impossible 7 set. The actor is reportedly back on the UK set of the film to resume filming after going ballistic on members of his crew for allegedly violating COVID-19 protocols. The star reportedly left the set early for a holiday break.

According to Variety, Cruise, 58, is filming at Longcross Film Studios, a former Ministry of Defence location and a testing site for tanks. Blockbusters like Skyfall, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: The Dark World have been filmed there as well.

RELATED: Mission: Impossible - Every Major Cast Member's Net Worth

Principal photography on the film is expected to wrap up at Longcross for a November 19, 2021 release. Audio of the actor’s outbursts were leaked earlier this month in which Cruise threatened to fire crew members after observing people standing close to each other near a computer. It’s unclear if they were wearing masks at the time.

"We are creating thousands of jobs you motherf--kers," he is heard shouting in the audio, which was obtained by The Sun. "I don't ever want to see it again. Ever. And if you don't do it, you're fired, and I see you do it again, you're f--king gone."

Reports also surfaced that a number of crew members quit after a second rant by the Hollywood actor. Cruise’s actions were supported by stars like George Clooney, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar. A source told People magazine that the actor "feels the pressure of how scary things look now" as he strives to maintain a "gold standard" of filming a movie amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Cruise has been criticized in the past after the 2015 documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief shed light on Cruise's role in Scientology. The film claims Cruise used Sea Org workers as free labor. In addition, the film alleges that the actor’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman was wiretapped on Tom Cruise's suggestion, which Cruise's lawyer denied.

ASRock DeskMini H470 Review: A No-Frills LGA 1200 mini-PC Platform

The mini-STX form-factor was introduced by Intel in 2015 to provide additional options in the burgeoning small form-factor (SFF) PC space. Since then, vendors such as ASRock, ECS, and MSI have been releasing new products based on the mSTX form-factor – and not just for Intel platforms, but AMD as well. As a result, while it’s still a small part of an overall much larger market, mSTX has seen increasing traction as the smallest form factor to still be able to accept socketed CPUs.

A good chunk of mSTX’s success, in turn, has been thanks to the efforts of ASRock. The company’s DeskMini series is one of the better known mSTX line-ups in the market. Slotting in between traditional motherboards and barebones ultra-compact form-factor machines, DeskMini mSTX boxes are the next step past UCFF machines in terms of customization: in addition to user-upgradable RAM and permanent storage, the user is free to choose any suitable CPU (subject to TDP limitations) and a cooler compatible with the supplied chassis – making it possible to configure and upgrade the very heart of a mSTX box. Graphics still need to be integrated (or occasionally, added via MXM cards), but with integrated graphics getting better with every generation, mSTX has been increasingly unimpeded by this trade-off.

Today we’re going to be taking a look as the DeskMini H470 - ASRock's offering for Intel's LGA 1200 processors using the H470 chipset. Aspects we’ll be covering include a look at a sample build process, the results from subjecting it to our standard SFF PC evaluation routine, and an analysis of how it stacks up against the other SFF options in the market.

She was also let go from Netflix’s Fuller House, while her younger daughter Olivia Jade lost her partnership with TRESemmé and the Sephora chain of beauty products.

Billionaire Ron Burkle Buys Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch

Billionaire businessman Ron Burkle has purchased Michael Jackson's famed Neverland Ranch in California. The businessman bought the 2,700-acre property in Los Olivos, near Santa Barbara, as a land banking opportunity, his spokesperson said Thursday in an email. Jackon owned the home and private amusement park from 1988 until 2005. Following Jackson's death in 2009, the estate was put up for sale in 2015.

The Wall Street Journal reports the property was sold for $22 million to Burkle, a co-founder of the investment firm Yucaipa Companies and an associate of the late pop star. The businessman, who built his capital by buying and selling grocery store chains. Recently, he invested in the Beverly Hills-based APA agency via his Yucaipa Companies firm.

RELATED: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Neverland Ranch

The original asking price of the Neverland property was $100 million in 2016 then dropped to $67 million in 2017. Aside from the 12,500 square-foot main residence and a 3,700 square-foot pool house, the property has a 50-seat movie theater and a dance studio and a "Disney-style" train station, a fire house and barn. The ranch's association with sexual abuse allegations was described as a reason for a substantial decrease in value.

Burkle has been interested in Zaca Lake, which adjoins the property, for a new Soho House, a members-only club with locations in Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Toronto. Burkle ultimately backed out of the deal. Burkle is the controlling shareholder of Soho House. After seeing the property from the air, Buerkle put in a purchase office.

Neverland Ranch was searched by police officers in connection with the People v. Jackson trial after he was charged with multiple counts of molesting a minor in 2003. Jackson was acquitted of all charges, yet, Jackson stated he would never live at the property again as he no longer considered the ranch a home and did not return to Neverland.

In 2019, Burkle funded Weinstein Co. executive David Glasser's film and television production company 101 Studios, which is set to produce a number films per year.

Nashville Predators Sign Erik Haula To One-Year Contract Worth $1.75 Million

One day after bringing back Mikael Granlund on a one-year deal worth $3.75 million, the Nashville Predators added another veteran forward in free agency.

On Wednesday, the Predators announced that they have signed Erik Haula to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. The 29-year-old split last season with the Carolina Panthers (41 games) and Florida Panthers (seven games).

In 48 games last season, Haula recorded 12 goals and 24 points, with all but two assists coming while he was in Carolina.

It's been a busy 24 hours for general manager David Poile, who addressed the need for offense with the regular season now just three weeks away.

Haula joins a Nashville team that finished just 17th in goals for last season (217). The Predators were one of the 24 teams that returned to play over the summer, but they were eliminated by the Arizona Coyotes in the qualifying round.

The 29-year-old will look to regain that star-like form he displayed in 2017-18. Haula had 29 goals and 55 points for the expansion Vegas Golden Knights franchise, helping them make a surprise run to the Stanley Cup Final - where they lost to the Washington Capitals in five games.

Haula was limited to 15 games in 2018-19 due to a severe knee injury. He tallied two goals and five assists that season.

The Predators are built to win now with a core that consists of superstar defenceman Roman Josi and standouts Ryan Ellis, Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene, Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen.

Nashville managed to bring back Granlund on a one-year deal, but they moved on from Nick Bonino (18 goals, 35 points), Craig Smith (18 goals, 31 points), and Kyle Turris (nine goals, 31 points) this offseason. They're obviously hoping that Granlund and Haula can help make up for some of the lost offensive production.

The Predators will be playing in the West Division for the 2020-21 season along with the Hurricanes, Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings and defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

George Clooney Made A Small Fraction Of What Arnold Schwarzenegger Earned In "Batman & Robin"

Despite a star-studded cast, the 1997 Batman & Robin superhero film fell way below fan expectations.

The cast was filled with several big-named movie stars from the '90s. George Clooney took over the Batman/Bruce Wayne role from Val Kilmer, who decided to step away from the franchise following Batman Forever (1995). Chris O'Donnell reprised his role as Batman's sidekick, Robin/Dick Grayson. Batman and Robin were accompanied by Batgirl/Barbara Wilson (Alicia Silverstone).

Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the film's main villain, Mr. Freeze/Dr. Victor Fries. Pulp Fiction star Uma Thurman played Poison Ivy/Dr. Pamela Isley. The late Jeep Swenson played their sidekick, Bane. This marked the first live action movie appearance for all three villains.

Over the years, Clooney hasn't been shy in admitting his displeasure and embarrassment with the film. Last month, Clooney said he was "terrible in it" and that he "sucked" as the Caped Crusader.

In a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Clooney talked more about his disappointment with Batman & Robin. During the interview, Clooney revealed that his pay for the film was a fraction of what Schwarzenegger made.

More specifically, Clooney revealed that he was paid just $1 million for the film, compared to $25 million for Schwarzenegger. That's right. A whopping $24 million difference between the film's title character/main superhero and the main villain.

RELATED: "Batman & Robin" Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman Apologizes Over The Film's Disappointment

In that interview with Stern, Clooney admitted that "it actually hurts to watch" the movie.

The extremely negative reviews from fans and critics led to the cancellation of a planned sequel, Batman Unchained. The film's director, Joel Schumacher, even apologized to those who were disappointed by Batman & Robin.

Following the release of Batman & Robin, it would be another eight years until another live action Batman film (Batman Begins) hit the big screens. Christopher Nolan launched his Dark Knight Trilogy, with Christian Bale taking on the Batman role for the films that received mostly positive reviews.

Intel's Maple Ridge (JHL8540) Thunderbolt 4 Controller Now Shipping

Following the launch of Thunderbolt 4 earlier this year as part of Intel's Tiger Lake CPUs, the next piece of the TB4 hardware stack has dropped this week with the release of Intel's first stand-alone Thunderbolt 4 controller, Maple Ridge (JHL8540). Previously announced back in July as part of Thunderbolt 4's reveal, Intel this week updated their Ark database to add a product page for the Maple Ridge controller family and flag that the first part is now shipping. With the release of the discrete Thunderbolt 4 controller, it will now be possible for hardware vendors to build TB4 hosts with additional ports, or in devices not using Intel's Tiger Lake Silicon.

This late-December launch follow's Intel's previous roadmap, which had the launch of standalone controllers set to take place before the end of 2020. These included the Goshen Ridge (JHL8440) device controller – for use in docks and peripherals, and the Maple Ridge (JHL8540 and JHL8340) host controllers – for use in computers, tablets, and other client devices. Goshen Ridge went into production soon after the announcement. And with the release of Maple Ridge Intel has also kept its promise here, getting it out just prior to the end of the year.

For quite some time, Thunderbolt ports were found only on systems with Intel processors. However, last year we saw vendors such as ASRock innovate with the introduction of a Thunderbolt 3 port on the X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3, an AMD Ryzen platform motherboard. This was followed a few months back by the introduction of M1-based Macs featuring Thunderbolt 3 (backed by Apple's in-house controllers). The use of Maple Ridge will now enable motherboard vendors to create systems with Thunderbolt 4 ports that do not necessarily need to be based on Intel processors.

The JHL8540 Maple Ridge controller interfaces with the host processor using a PCIe 3.0 x4 link and also takes in two Display Port 1.4a inputs. On the downstream side, the controller enables two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which along with their native Thunderbolt (packet encapsulation) abilities can also be used as straight-up USB4 ports, or as DisplayPorts via USB-C's DP alt mode.

The PCIe switch and, in general, the PCIe support in Maple Ridge has been updated to work with many optional features, keeping security in mind and the rich variety of PCIe devices coming into the market. For example, Maple Ridge includes PCIe peer-to-peer support which allows two PCIe devices connected to the two Thunderbolt 4 ports to exchange data with each other without having to make it travel upstream to the host RAM. From a security viewpoint, Access Control Services (ACS) is also supported to provide isolation between different sets of PCIe devices and make them always go through the IOMMU. Precision Time Measurement (PTM) is also a supported feature, allowing different downstream PCIe devices to accurately synchronize with each other and the host system.

It must be noted that Thunderbolt 4 brings more guaranteed bandwidth to end-users. With Thunderbolt 3, device vendors could skimp on the connection of the controller to the host processor – using only a PCIe 3.0 x2 upstream link instead of PCIe 3.0 x4, but still obtain Thunderbolt 3 certification. This reduced the minimum available PCIe data bandwidth to just 16 Gbps. With Thunderbolt 4, that is no longer possible. Vendors are mandated to use a full PCIe 3.0 x4 link if they desire Thunderbolt 4 certification. Thunderbolt 3's bandwidth sharing mechanism between video and data also put in some dampeners – even in the absence of tunneling DisplayPort streams, 18 Gbps of bandwidth was always reserved for video traffic, and only 22 Gbps available for actual data transfer. Thunderbolt 4 apparently fixes that with up to 32 Gbps of data traffic (full PCIe 3.0 x4 bandwidth) available, allowing devices such as Thunderbolt 4 SSDs to provide 3GBps+ speeds.

Intel has not published official pricing of the new Maple Ridge controller, however Mouser Electornics is listing the controllers for as cheap as $11.34 in bulk quantities. As for the availability of devices featuring the JHL8540, I suspect we're going to see them sooner than later. Intel's next-generation desktop platform, Rocket Lake-S, is not expected to have built-in support for Thunderbolt 4, as this feature was noticeably absent from Intel's Rocket Lake reveal back in October. So adding Thunderbolt 4 to Rocket Lake-S will likely require using Maple Ridge.

This would consistent with other documentation from Intel, such as the Intel 500 series chipset guidelines, which apparently point to instructions to use a discrete USB4-compliant Intel Thunderbolt 4 controller connecting to four PCIe 3.0 lanes from the chipset for USB4/Thunderbolt 4 support. To that end, we expect that the development of actual hardware by Intel’s partners using the Maple Ridge controller should be well under way by now.
