George Harrison sent Richard Nixon irate telegram after ‘kicking me out of the country’
George Harrison once sent an angry telegram to former U.S. President Richard Nixon after he was kicked out of the country back in the 1970s.
In Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) documents uncovered in a Freedom of Information Act search by Beatles researcher Chip Madinger and published by Billboard, the former Beatles star was reportedly furious after he was denied permission to stay in the U.S.
The iconic musician, who died in 2001, went to the United States in 1973 to have meetings with record label Apple, and work on his former bandmate Ringo Starr’s album.
He was detained at the airport after he arrived from Pakistan, and was eventually allowed into the country, However, he was told to leave the U.S. three months later, after immigration officials refused to extend his visa.
The telegram, addressed to “President Richard Nixon, White House DC,” was littered with spelling mistakes, leading Chip to believe that George dictated it.
It reads, “Sir, how can you bomb Cambonian (sic) citizens and worry about kicking me out of the country for smoking marijuana at the time. Your repressive emperaour (sic) war monger ways stop before too piece (cq) luv (cq). We will run the world Harry Krisher, Hare Hara Krishne Hare Hara Hare Hara Krishner. George Harrison.”
