Idris Elba is not Deadshot in ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel
Idris Elba will no longer be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot in the Suicide Squad sequel, and will instead play an entirely different character.
It was originally reported that the 46-year-old Brit was in line to take on the role of the DC Comics’ anti-hero, after Smith dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.
However, writer and director James Gunn, along with studio Warner Bros., are said to have made the decision to move on from the Deadshot character, with Elba now onboard to play a completely new character, according to Variety.
Editors at the publication report that the move was fuelled by Gunn and his team being desperate to avoid upsetting Smith, who played the character in the 2016 film, while the casting decision would also leave the door open for him to make a return in the future if he so desired.
Gunn is said to have reached out to Elba just days after Smith backed out of the sequel, titled The Suicide Squad, and the meeting went so well that he agreed to join the sequel.
It is not known what character the Luther star will play in the movie.
Only three characters from the original Suicide Squad are expected to make a return: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller.
The DC movie, which also starred Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne, grossed more than US$747 million worldwide, though it was panned by critics with just a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gunn is currently in the process of filling out the rest of his cast, with production slated to begin later this year.
