Man pays for meals at Florida restaurant, shot dead after argument erupts

A man has paid the ultimate price for being a Good Samaritan at a Florida restaurant over the weekend.

Craig Brewer, 41, who was paying for customers meals and handing out $20 bills at a Waffle House in Gainesville early Sunday morning, was shot dead following a confrontation.

Ezekiel Luke Hicks, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Ezekiel Hicks is accused of first-degree murder in a Florida Waffle House shooting on April 7, 2019.

“The victim was engaging folks at the restaurant, and there was a disagreement with a female customer,” Alachua County sheriff’s Lt. Brett Rhodenizer told the Gainesville Sun.

Police said Brewer got into an argument with a woman who said she didn’t receive any money from him. A man then confronted Brewer before leaving the restaurant.

The man soon returned with a gun. One person tried to dissuade him from re-entering the establishment, but was unsuccessful.

A brief fight occurred before the man pulled out the firearm and shot Brewer several times, including at least once in the head, police said.

The entire incident was caught on a security camera inside the restaurant.

Police were called earlier in the night to clear the restaurant due to overcrowding after patrons refused to leave. They then arrived to a fresh murder scene.

Rhodenizer said the shooting occurred just before or as officers were arriving to the restaurant.

“The evidence in the case is fairly straightforward,” Rhodenizer said. “We’re working with the state attorney. It’s pretty obvious. We have on video what happened.”
