The Doomsday Clock Has Been Moved Closer To Midnight Than Ever Before
The Doomsday Clock is now set at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to midnight in its 73-year history.
All is not well in the world. Countries are at war, and climate change is ravaging the planet. For many, the only way to avoid having some sort of nervous breakdown is to carry on as if nothing is wrong, and we totally get that. For others, burying their heads in the sand is simply not an option, and that is something they are trying to get across to everyone.
There is so much going on all at once that it can be hard for some people to comprehend exactly how much trouble the planet is in. That's one of the reasons the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the Doomsday Clock shortly after the end of World War 2. It's a visual representation of how close we might be to the end of the world as we know it.

At first, the clock was used to gauge the severity of tensions between the US and Russia. However, since 1991, the committee that determines at what time the clock is set also takes into account climate change and cyber warfare reports Business Insider. That's why last week, during the annual setting of the Doomsday Clock, the committee moved it to 100 seconds to midnight.
The closer the time is to midnight, the greater the threat of the end of the world, and 100 seconds away is the closest the clock has ever been to oblivion. The committee cites tensions between countries armed with nuclear weapons, and the lack of recognition by world leaders towards increasingly more worrying levels of climate change for the move towards midnight.
The clock was set at two minutes to midnight in 1953, 2018, and 2019, but this is the first time it has ever moved closer than that. What's even more worrying is the committee decided on when to set the time before things between the US and Iran had really even escalated. They have said what has happened since making their decision further justifies that they made the right call.
