When it comes to sports we usually like to focus on the players and their stats but what about the coaches and managers? If it wasn't for them the players wouldn't have anyone guiding them to victory. We know that the players make the big bucks but so do the coaches and managers.

Looking at MLB in the 2019 off-season there have been many changes with managers. Many former MLB players have taken on the role of being managers. So let's take a look at the top 8 richest MLB managers signed in the 2019 off-season.

8 David Ross With Chicago Cubs

David Ross played for many teams before his retirement. He started his career playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers for three seasons and then went to the Cincinnati Reds for two seasons. Then, he spent four seasons with the Atlanta Braves. And then he spent two seasons with the Boston Red Sox. Last but not least he spent two seasons with the Chicago Cubs and then retired and took on the role of manager of the Chicago Cubs.

David Ross won the World Series twice with the Boston Red Sox as well as in 2016 with the Chicago Cubs. There's no wonder he has an $11 million net worth to his name. On October 24, 2019, the Cubs signed Ross a three-year deal to take over Joe Maddon's spot. Joe Maddon was not successful in taking his team to the playoffs in the 2018/2019 season. They finished with an 84-78 record finishing third in the NL Central division.

7 Carlos Beltrán With New York Mets

Carlos Beltran signed a contract with the New York Mets worth $3 million dollars with a fourth-year option. Beltran is taking over Mickey Callaway's role as manager and it is safe to say that New York is no new place for Beltran as he spent many years with the New York Yankees as a former player.

In addition, Beltran also played several seasons (20) to be exact, for the New York Mets. Just three years after his retirement as a baseball player he took on the managerial role for the New York Mets. Many people know he is going to be successful as a manager, as even other baseball players have commented saying so.

6 Derek Shelton With Pittsburgh Pirates

Derek Shelton the former Twins bench coach signed a 3 year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates as manager. He also spent seven years as the Rays hitting coach. It is evident that Shelton has the experience of coaching and years to show for it. This new leadership shall take away from the team that finished last in the NL Central.

The organization believes that Derek Shelton is the missing piece of the puzzle and will help set the right tone for the team and help everyone to challenge one another in order to succeed. Shelton took up the eighth and last manager opening joining all the other managers on this list. On December 23rd, 2019 the Pirates filled Derek's coaching staff by hiring coach Glenn Sherlock. He will be coaching the catchers primarily.

5 Mike Matheny With Kansas City Royals

Mike Matheny signed with the Kansas City Royals and this comes as no surprise. Matheny took on an advisory role with the Royals a year ago. According to Fox Sports, his time as a manager has shown success as the 49-year-old helped his team gain a 591-474 record with the Cardinals.

All in all, Matheny was the first manager to get to the postseason in his first four seasons. Matheny brings postseason experience, which is so important. He managed 43 playoff games in St. Louis, which means his true expertise will be progressing the young stars that he has on his team for the 2020 season.

4 Jayce Tingler  Contract With San Diego Padres

Jayce Tingler became the manager of the San Diego Padres in late October of 2019. He is one of the youngest managers behind Rocco Baldelli who manages the Minnesota Twins. He is considered a rookie in terms of managing but he does have managing experience in the minor leagues. He was the manager in the Arizona Rookie League in 2010, and he also managed in the Dominican summer league. Coaching is in Tingler's family as his mom and dad were also coaches. So it is fair to say that Tingler is meant to be a coach.

Another clear sign that Tingler is meant to manage the San Diego Padres is that his greatest skill as a former baseball player is the Padres biggest downfall. Tingler was very good at reaching base in his career and the Padres inability to do this effectively is quite apparent. So Tingler could definitely help the team in that department.

3 Gabe Kapler With San Francisco Giants

Gabe Kapler was the perfect fit for the Giants as the organization was searching for a manager that could sustain strong relationships with the players, and the front office and Kapler will be successful at doing this. He only has two years of experience as a major league manager for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Phillies weren't successful with making the playoffs. But if Kapler is able to lead the Giants to the playoffs this will give him a contract extension with the Giants and better yet prove that he is a successful manager.

Only time will tell so we will have to see how Kapler plays out with the Giants. At the age of 44, Kapler is a fitness fanatic and during his career as a baseball player, he played for the Tigers, Rangers, Red Sox, Brewers, and Rays.

2 Joe Girardi With Philadelphia Phillies

Joe Girardi made a nice home with the New York Yankees as the manager for 9 years. According to Chicago Tribune, "Girardi managed the Yankees for 10 years, compiling a 910-710 record and winning one World Series in 2009." When Joe Girardi left the Yankees it was a shock but change is always needed.

It was only a matter of time until Girardi found a new home. In October of 2019, Joe Girardi signed a 3-year contract worth $7.5 million with the Philadelphia Phillies. Girardi going to the Phillies made the most sense for him. With his knowledge, skills, and expertise he can turn the Phillies into a winning team, but of course, it will take time. This new chapter in Girardi's life will be interesting for many fans to see.

1 Joe Maddon With Los Angeles Angels

Joe Maddon is probably one of the biggest MLB manager names out there. The Los Angeles Angels hits home for Maddon as he spent his career as a baseball player with the Angels. Maddon has joined a team that has not won the playoffs in 10 years and signed a 12 million dollar contract for three years. Let's not also forget that the Angels organization has also been dealing with the death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Maddon has years of expertise and experience as a manager, so there's no doubt that he will do wonders for the Angels.

The organization is excited to welcome Maddon to the Angels clubhouse. Evidently, every manager's focus is winning, but Maddon is a manager that is very focused on winning and that is what the Angels are in need of. This will also help to deflate the death of Tyler Skaggs (may he R.I.P).
