Trevor Story Agrees To Two-Year, $27.5 Million Contract With Rockies

While the Colorado Rockies try to figure out a difficult situation with Nolan Arenado, the front office went to work in finalizing a deal with one of their other franchise players.

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Rockies and Story agreed to a two-year deal worth $27.5 million, thus ensuring they avoid arbitration over the next two years.

As Passan noted above, Story will be among the many superstar free agents in two years. Right now, the 2021-22 class is slated to feature, a trio of future Hall of Famer pitchers in Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke and possibly Charlie Blackmon, Giancarlo Stanton, J.D. Martinez and Freddie Freeman.

Of course, a large portion of those free agents could very well sign deals with their current teams by then. But Story, being only 27 years of age, is set up for a giant payday in two years --  by the Rockies or another team.

The Rockies finished a disappointing 71-91 in 2019 after reaching the postseason in each of the previous two years. This included a trip to the NLDS in 2018, where they fell to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Story, a two-time All-Star, has won a pair of Silver Slugger Award -- in 2018 and 2019. He has hit at least 24 home runs in each of his first four MLB seasons, and Story has recorded a .276 batting average and .878 OPS for his career.

Now, the Rockies need to figure out what to do with Arenado, the franchise's best player. Arenado expressed that he feels disrespected by the Rockies as his name continues to pop up in the trade rumor mill.

If the Rockies are to make another run at the postseason in 2020, they'll have to clear the air with Arenado. He and Story have been instrumental in turning the Rockies around, and the two stars give Colorado a solid chance at nabbing a Wild Card spot.
