Dak Prescott Reportedly Rejected $33 Million Per Year Deal From Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys need to work on a contract with quarterback Dak Prescott, otherwise they risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

The 26-year-old Prescott completed his four-year rookie contract, and the two-time Pro Bowler is set to land a career-changing deal that will make him one of the game's highest-paid quarterbacks.

According to a report from Clarence E. Hill Jr. from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys and Prescott were nearing a deal that would have given him $33 million per season.

However, Prescott simply increased his asking price, and the two sides were never able to finalize a deal. Sources told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Prescott would like comparable money to Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks, who makes $35 million per year.

Quarterbacks are making more and more money with each passing year. Though Prescott isn't exactly a top-five player at his position, he's done more than enough to earn a deal that would fall in line with what Wilson is earning.

Through his first four seasons, Prescott has compiled a 40-24 record with the Cowboys. He has 15,778 passing yards with 97 touchdowns against 36 interceptions. Prescott led Dallas to NFC East division titles in 2016 and 2018, plus a respectable 9-7 in 2017. However, they finished 8-8 in 2019 following a 3-0 start and missed the playoffs.

Prescott was one of the few positives in a disappointing season for the Cowboys, who entered 2019 with Super Bowl aspirations. But he's more than proven his ability to take this team deep into the postseason, so it'd be a major surprise if they didn't end up paying Prescott.

Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper and stud cornerback Byron Jones are also free agents this offseason. But the Cowboys will likely have to let one go in free agency, since Prescott's new deal will chew up a giant portion of their remaining cap space.
