El Paso Zoo Is Letting People Name Cockroaches After Their Exes Again
El Paso Zoo's Quit Bugging Me campaign has returned for a second straight year, allowing people to name a cockroach after one of their exes.
With Christmas and New Year a distant memory now that we have moved into February, the next holiday on the calendar is one that tends to split society right down the middle. Valentine's Day. If you have someone to spend Valentine's Day with then it's a great holiday. If you don't, it feels as if everyone who has another half is rubbing it in your face.
Valentine's Day also has no compassion for people who might have recently been through a break-up. Breaking up with someone is always tough. When it happens around the time of year everyone is celebrating being a part of a couple, it is so much worse. Many of us will be looking for something, anything to make us feel even a little bit better.

If a pint of ice cream or a bottle of wine isn't your bag, then El Paso Zoo might have the perfect alternative. You might have heard of an initiative the zoo ran last Valentine's Day called Quit Bugging Me. It allowed people to name a cockroach after one of their exes and then watch that cockroach be fed to a meerkat. Take it from us, it's a pretty satisfying and cathartic process.
The good news is, the campaign has returned for a second year, reports the El Paso Times. "We had a tremendous response last year and we are ready to do it all over again," the zoo wrote on its Facebook page. It is upping its game for this year's celebration of love, however. Any animal that eats cockroaches will be getting in on the fun, with the zoo even posting a feeding timetable for Valentine's weekend.
The best part of all? The service costs absolutely nothing. All the zoo asks is that you make a donation. In fact, to up the stakes, Zoo director Joe Montisano will eat a cockroach himself for every $1000 raised. Name submissions are open from now until February 15, 2020. Only first names will be shown during the live streams of the feedings, and the submitters' names won't be visible. You'll know who it's named after though, and that's all that matters.
