Everything You Need To Know About Birds Of Prey's 'Name Change'
Birds of Prey has (sort of) undergone a name change due to its slow start at the box office. Let us explain what we mean by that exactly.
Who would have thought 20 years ago that superhero movies would go on to become such a big deal? Sony paid a minimal amount for the movie rights to Spider-Man at the tail end of the 1990s, not knowing how massive the Marvel Cinematic Universe would become. Sony's ownership of Spidey is what caused all that trouble between them and Disney last year.
Multiple superhero movies have broken the billion-dollar boundary at the box office. As great as that is, it has led to people immediately thinking any superhero movie that doesn't hit that mark is a failure. It's one of the reasons Birds of Prey has been getting such a bad rap this week as it suffered the worst opening weekend of any DCEU movie.
It's a real shame as those who have been to see the movie will know that it is one of the better offerings from DC in recent years. There are a number of reasons why it isn't faring so well at the box office. A lot of the blame has been placed on its title. The focus, and main selling point, of the movie is Harley Quinn. However, Quinn's name only features in the extended title, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
Due to the lengthy title, most theaters simply have the movie listed as Birds of Prey. Makes sense. However, more casual movie-goers might not realize that's the new Harley Quinn movie, which is why Warner Bros. Studios has suggested theaters tweak the listing. That's why when you now search for showtimes of the movie, chances are it will now be listed as Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey.
Just to be clear, the name of the movie has not been changed. That would require a lot more work that can't really be done at this point. The name has only been changed on theater listings to entice more people to see the movie. Margot Robbie, who not only plays Quinn but is a producer on the movie, hinted that they were planning on doing something like this during a recent interview. It's just a shame the action wasn't taken prior to its release.
