Netfix Rolls Out Daily Top 10 Lists Giving A Rare Peek Into Its Hidden Metrics

Netflix has rolled out a top ten feature in the US giving its users a rare peek behind the curtain when it comes to the service's metrics.

Creators and fans of movies and TV shows have very obvious and clear ways of determining whether something they're a part of has been a success or not. Movies can be judged by how much they make in ticket sales at the box office, while a TV show's success isn't defined monetarily but by its rating aka how many people tuned in to watch.

Those elements have been forced to become less meaningful in recent years due to the emergence of streaming services. Some movies, such as ones created by Netflix, bypass the theaters entirely and debut on a streaming service. Some of the biggest and best TV shows in the world now are also exclusive to streaming services.

That means simply measuring how many people are clicking on and thus watching particular movies and TV shows on streaming services then, right? Well, it's not that simple. While respective services will know their own numbers, most of them don't share that information with others. Netflix keeps its viewing figures very close to its chest, which is why the rollout of a brand new feature has taken us somewhat by surprise.

A Netflix top ten. Some of you might have noticed it already. There will be the top ten most-watched movies that day, most-watched TV shows, and also an overall list combining the two reports Deadline. Netflix trialed the feature in the UK and Mexico and has now rolled out the lists in the US too. As with any other category, the lists will appear as rows and where they appear for viewers will be determined by the content of them on any given day.

As well as a spot in the top ten, any titles on the list will have a top ten badge and also an ID in its description revealing exactly where in the top ten it falls. Netflix has had something similar to this for a while in the form of "Popular Now" and "Trending Now" categories. However, its top tens are the first time it has allowed viewers to see which of its movies and TV shows are performing better than others and have the very best definitively ranked.
