Tony Romo Could Hit Open Market & Become Highest-Paid NFL Analyst
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo just completed his third successful season as an NFL analyst for CBS, working alongside their top play-by-play man in Jim Nantz.
Romo's three-year deal with CBS has expired, and a report from Andrew Marchand of the New York Post says the 39-year-old "could finally hit the open market." A new contract with CBS hasn't been agreed upon, the report from Marchand outlined.
Marchand also stated that ESPN is going to be the "main competition" for Romo's services. Citing sources, Marchand also added that Romo's deal will be worth more than $10 million season.
This would surpass John Madden - the Hall of Fame head coach and EA Sports Madden video game franchise front man -as the highest-paid analyst in history. Madden earned $8 million annually as an NFL television analyst, per Marchand.
Romo, who spent his entire career with the Cowboys from 2003 to 2016, retired after the 2016 season. A fractured collarbone forced him to miss all but four games. A fractured vertebra sidelined Romo for the first 15 games in 2016, and by the time he returned, rookie sensation Dak Prescott had won the starting job.

ESPN carries the Monday Night Football broadcasts, and they've undergone a handful of notable changes on the announce team. Joe Tessitore became the program's third play-by-play in four years in 2018, and two-time Super Bowl Champion Booger McFarland has served has served as an analyst for two years now. Whether or not he and Tessitore would stay on, in the event of Romo getting hired, remains to be seen.
He was expected to command plenty of interest on the free agent market, but Romo was content on retiring while stepping right into the broadcast booth. He's excelled in that role, and his grade-A knowledge and humorous personality have made Romo one of the most admired and respected analysts in American sports.
Let the bids for Romo begin.
