A Live-Action Pokémon TV Show Could Be Coming To HBO Max

HBO Max might be getting its very own live-action Pokémon TV series off the back of Detective Pikachu's success.

Streaming services are the order of the day when it comes to entertainment in 2020. For a while, it felt as if no one would be able to knock Netflix from its lofty position. It has done a tremendous job of establishing itself as the one stop shop for everyone's TV and movie streaming needs. However, what Netflix didn't account for was Disney wading in with its decades of universally loved original content.

With both Netflix and Disney+ in the streaming arena, anyone else would be crazy to try and challenge for that crown, right? Well, maybe, but that isn't going to stop HBO from launching its own service HBO Max later this year. In defense of HBO, it does have some pretty significant OC of its own to lure fans in. It will need to bring in some big names to boost that OC, though.

According to We Got This Covered, it might well be working on that as we speak. Rumor has it HBO has landed the services of Pokémon, and as franchises go, they don't get much bigger than that. Pokémon has been at the forefront of popular culture for 25 years, grossing something in the region of $100 billion during that time. That legacy could be set to continue on HBO Max.

If the rumors are true, it will be something Pokémon has only dabbled with thus far. The live-action genre. Its first foray into the live-action world took place in 2019 via the release of Detective Pikachu. The movie enjoyed massive amounts of success all over the world so why wouldn't Pokémon want to follow up on that? So far, there has been no word on if the HBO Max TV show will follow on from or even take place in the same universe as Detective Pikachu.

There have been rumors that the show will bring new life to the original characters that made the franchise great. Apparently, Ash, Brock, and Misty will once again be the stars. A multi-billion dollar franchise, live-action, nostalgia. If the rumors are true, then perhaps HBO Max has just given itself a great big fighting chance in tempting subscribers away from Disney+ and Netflix.
