Dodgers & Red Sox Stand To Lose Most In Ticket Revenue If MLB Season Is Cancelled
The 2020 MLB season was originally scheduled to begin on Thursday - with all 30 teams in action - but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to put the campaign on pause.
Multiple reports suggest that the 2020 season may not even start until June or July. The 2019-20 NHL seasons are also currently on pause, with both postseasons scheduled to begin in April.
Leagues and teams stand to lose tens of millions (perhaps up to hundreds) in million during a suspension in play, but they obviously understand that public safety and health is the top priority.
If the 2020 MLB season is cancelled, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox stand to lose the most money. TicketIQ.com projected that the Dodgers would lose about $13.104 million in secondary market ticket prices. The New York Yankees were projected to lose the most at about $15.186 million.
If half the season was postponed or cancelled, TicketIQ projected the Dodgers to lose out on approx. $200.189 million for ticket sales, followed by the Red Sox at around $180.535 million. In comparison, the Miami Marlins were projected to lose the smallest amount of ticket sales (approx. $23.237 million).
Using the numbers ansd estimations from TicketIQ, Michael J. Duarte of NBC Los Angeles pointed out that the Dodgers could lose over $405 million in ticket sales if the entire 2020 season was lost. The Red Sox would miss out on approx. $365.583 million.
Those estimates suggest that the Yankees would lose the third most at about $360.179 million, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals (slightly under $310 million) and the Chicago Cubs (about $297.105 million).
Of course, it's highly unlikely that the entire 2020 MLB season will get canceled, but the league and players have to be prepared for anything. All signs point towards the season not starting any time before June. Even if the season isn't postponed, it's going to be difficult for MLB to successfully run a 162-game season.
