Marcus Mariota's Contract With Raiders Is Worth $17.6 Million

Last week, it was announced that the Las Vegas Raiders had signed Marcus Mariota in free agency, giving the No. 2 overall pick from 2015 a chance to compete with Derek Carr for the starting duties.

In an update, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that Mariota will receive a shiny two-year contract worth $17.6 million, with $7.5 million of it being fully guaranteed for the 2020 seasno.

Garafolo also detailed the incentives in Mariota's contract.

That's a nice contract for a backup quarterback, and it suggests that head coach Jon Gruden isn't planning to place him on the bench. Rather, Mariota should be able to challenge No. 1 quarterback Derek Carr for the starting duties this offseason.

Last week, the Cleveland Browns handed career journeyman Case Keenum a three-year, $18 million contract to back up Baker Mayfield. Clearly, this was the right year to be a backup quarterback in free agency.

In what turned out to be his final season with the Tennessee Titans, Mariota was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill during Week 6. The latter revived his career and won seven of 10 starts, before taking Tennessee all the way to the 2019 AFC Championship Game.

Tannehill received a $118 million extension from the Titans before the start of free agency, and Mariota didn't wait long to find his next team. The Raiders were linked to Tom Brady (he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), which suggested that they're not fully set on Carr.

Perhaps Mariota will follow the footsteps of the man who succeeded him in Tennessee. That is, maybe he'll make the most of his second opportunity with a new team by taking over as the starter.

Through his first five NFL seasons, Mariota compiled a 29-32 record with 76 touchdowns against 44 interceptions. He did help Tennessee record winning seasons every year from 2016 to 2018 (all 9-7) while leading them to the 2017 AFC Divisional Round. But perhaps he'll live up to his full potential once and for all in Vegas.
