Tony Romo's New Deal With CBS Is Reportedly Worth $180 Million

Last week, it was reported that CBS handed analyst Tony Romo a new contract worth over $100 million.

As it turns out, the deal is worth much, much more.

Andrew Marchand of the New York Post was first to break the news on Romo's new deal. Now, Marchand is reporting that Romo's new contract carries a 10-year value for a whopping $180 million.

As Marchand noted in his initial report, this is the richest contract ever for a sports analyst, and by a very wide margin. Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden previously held the record for the highest-paid ever at $8 million annually.

Just how big is Romo's new deal here? Well, let's just say that no player in NFL history has ever signed a contract worth $180 million. In fact, none of them have come anywhere close.

Right now, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan holds the record for the largest contract ever at $150 million, which was signed in 2015. Chicago Bears star linebacker Khalil Mack is second behind Ryan at $141 million.

Citing sources, Marchand's latest report also stated that ESPN was preparing to offer Romo a 10-year deal worth $140 million, and perhaps more if the former Pro Bowl became a free agent.

According to Spotrac.com, Romo made approximately $127.422 million during his NFL career, which spanned from 2004 to 2016. He spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the starter in the midst of the 2006 campaign. Romo led Dallas to the postseason four times - in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2014.

Romo retired after the 2016 season, as injuries quickly derailed his productive career. A broken collarbone limited him to four games in 2015, and a fractured vertebra kept him out for practically the entire 2016 campaign. Rookie Dak Prescott took over as the starter and performed nicely, and Romo saw no action until the Cowboys' meaningless Week 17 game. Instead of testing the free agent market, Romo opted to retire.

And from a financial standpoint, leaving the gridiron for the broadcast booth turned out to be a genius decision by Romo.
