Alicia Silverstone The Wants Opportunity To Play Batgirl Again

Miss Match and Clueless Star Alicia Silverstone earned worldwide fame with her role as Barbara Wilson/Batgirl in Batman & Robin (1997).

Though the movie made just over $238.2 million at the box office, it went down as one of the most criticized and unpopular films ever. Batman & Robin was such a disaster that plans for a sequel, Batman Triumphant, were dropped.

The movie may not have sat well with critics and Batman films, but Silverstone received even greater fame for her performance as Batgirl. She was the first person to portray the popular DC Comics superheroine in a live action film, too.

In an interview with Collider, Silverstone reflected on some of the positives for her in Batman & Robin. She cited the chances to work with Michael Gough (Alfred Pennyworth) and Uma Thurman (Dr. Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy). Moving away from the tradition in the comics and other adaptations Alfred Barbara's uncle in Batman & Robin.

"I mean, I loved all my scenes with Michael Gough," Silverstone said. "Michael Gough is a dream and I just love that man so much. So, you know, just being with him was incredible and lovely."

Not only that, but Silverstone admitted that she would love the opportunity to portray Batgirl again.

"I’m trying to think what else I’d be proud of. I mean, I like it when I get to do the fighting scenes with Uma Thurman. That’s that’s fun. But I’d like to do it all over again as this woman! (Laughs) I think it would be much better now."

For what it's worth, there hasn't been a Batgirl nor a Robin (portrayed by Chris O'Donnell in Batman & Robin) announced for Matt Reeves' upcoming 2021 blockbuster, The Batman. Batgirl has not appeared in a live action film since Silverstone portrayed the character.

Following the release and negative reception of Batman & Robin, the cinema world had to wait eight more years for the character to return to the big screens. The first film of Christopher Nolan's trilogy, Batman Begins hit theaters in 2005. All three of his Batman movies received extremely positive reviews.

Batman & Robin may not have come anywhere close to reaching expectations, and director Joel Schumacher even apologized to those who were disappointed. But it's also fair to wonder if we would have ever been treated to Nolan's epic trilogy had Batman & Robin done well from a critical standpoint. It's safe to say that practically all is forgiven.
