Marvel Reveals Completely New Release Schedule For MCU Phase Four
The move of Black Widow's release date has had a domino effect on the rest of the MCU as Marvel reshuffles its entire Phase Four schedule.
Since movie theaters around the world are currently closed indefinitely, studios releasing movies right now would be pretty pointless. The longer this pandemic goes on, the more movies' release dates are being altered. Most are getting pushed back to later in the year which is proving to be more of an issue for some features than others.
Having to change a movie's release date will be an annoying and expensive practice for anyone forced to do it. All would have had very specific schedules they wanted to stick to which will have included premieres, tours, and an advertising campaign that cost a lot of money. However, some studios have the added headache of future movies to worry about.
Marvel, for instance. Marvel has released 23 MCU movies over the course of the past 12 years. All of them are intricately connected, which means they've had to be released in the correct order. The next chapter in the MCU, Black Widow was scheduled to be released on May 1, 2020. Disney revealed that the movie's release date would be delayed, but didn't reveal an alternate date.
Clearly, some meetings regarding the fate of the movies scheduled to follow on from Black Widow needed to take place. Disney announced that Black Widow will now hit theaters on November 6, 2020. That was the date originally intended for The Eternals, which has now been moved to February 2021. The domino effect continues as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings moves to May 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to November 2021, and Thor: Love & Thunder will now not hit theaters until February 2022.
On top of all that, the untitled Marvel project scheduled for February 2022 appears to have disappeared altogether. There is some good news, though. The second untitled project, which keeps its release date of July 29, 2022, has been officially revealed to be Captain Marvel 2. Everything is still coming in the next two years Marvel fans, we just have a little bit longer to wait for Phase Four to get underway.
