MLB Allowing All 30 Teams To Issue Fans Ticket Refunds For Games Not Played

While Major League Baseball continues to explore different ways to begin the 2020 season, the league has given teams the green light to proceed with ticket refunds however they wish.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com, MLB "is allowing teams to offer refunds to fans for games currently not being played" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Refunds are not mandatory, and as Rogers noted, many teams will "likely" propose credit for the 2021 season instead.

Rogers' report also pointed out that the unplayed games considered to be postponed instead of canceled. As time continues to pass, the league will likely have to accept a shortened regular season, if they even get the thumbs up to play in 2020.

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals have already shared ticket refund policies. Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins ticket holders will receive credits for 2020 or 2021 games.

The regular season was slated to begin on March 26, with all 30 teams in action. The league had no choice but to postpone the start of the season. The 2019-20 NBA and NHL seasons are currently on pause as well.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported Tuesday that some MLB officials are "cautiously optimistic" about beginning the season at the end of June. MLB is also looking at a three-division realignment for the 2020 campaign.

Earlier this month, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reported that MLB and MLBPA were looking at a plan to begin the season in May. The idea would be for the 30 teams to play their games in the Phoenix area, with various facilities and spring training venues available. This plan would see the teams follow strict traveling and safety measures.

The 2020 MLB regular season was scheduled to conclude on Sept. 27, with the World Series ending by Oct. 28 (the date of a potential Game 7). There is a good chance that the postseason will have to be extended into November if MLB manages to play out the 2020 campaign.
