Netflix Numbers Reveal 64 Million Of Us Have Watched Tiger King

Tiger King has been the unmitigated streaming hit of this global pandemic and has apparently been watched by around 64 million people.

Just as governments around the world told people that they would need to stay at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Tiger King hit Netflix. For the documentary's creators and those of us who have enjoyed it, the timing couldn't have been any better. It had a worldwide captive audience and the numbers attached to Tiger King show that has really paid off.

According to Netflix's latest numbers, 64 million of its subscribers "chose to watch" Tiger King since its release. There's a reason for that very specific and slightly strange phrasing. Netflix recently changed the way it determines if a show or movie has been "watched". Previously, a viewing would only be counted if 70% of the movie or show had been watched.

Now, Netflix counts anything that has been clicked on and left to play for two minutes or longer. In Netflix's eyes, that means it wasn't merely clicked on by accident, or if a viewer thought it was something else, they should have figured out it wasn't what they were looking for before making it two minutes in. So 64 million people have clicked on Tiger King and watched it for at least two minutes.

The problem with using Netflix's new "chose to watch" method of determining Tiger King's popularity is it can't be compared to other shows and movies from the past. What we do know is it hasn't yet caught up with Netflix's most popular show ever, The Witcher. 76 million users chose to watch The Witcher. 6 Underground and Spenser Confidential have also registered higher numbers than Tiger King.

The wild docuseries remains in Netflix's top ten, however, so chances are its final number will rest somewhere quite a bit north of 64 million. It is no longer in the number one spot, though, a position it occupied for an impressive 25 consecutive days. Certain stars from the show have revealed that there was so much stuff left out of the doc, that there could easily be a season two. Just imagine the numbers that would do.
