Reports have surfaced that production of Spider-Man 3 has been put on hold amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
As theaters around the world are now closed for the foreseeable future, the movie industry is sort of in limbo for the time being. Release dates have been pushed back months, and in some cases indefinitely. The assumption is that will have a domino effect on the business. It will have to in order to avoid a wealth of movies all being released at the same time.
However, the postponement on production of movies slated to come much later may correct that problem. In a lot of cases, it is starting to become a case of movies that were due to be released in the coming months replacing those that were meant to be released at later dates since production won't have been completed on those movies.
As for Marvel and its MCU, they might have no other choice but to do that. Marvel has been assembling an intricately linked world of movies since 2008. The coming chapters cannot be released out of order which, annoyingly for Marvel, now includes MCU-based TV shows on Disney+. The latest blow to Marvel is the decision to postpone production on Spider-Man 3, reports Sight & Sound Magazine.
Marvel Studios had previously stated that pre-production and post-production on its movies would continue despite the pandemic. However, Spidey 3 is almost at a point where filming was supposed to begin (this summer) and it seems as if the point reached means Marvel and Sony can currently do no more to progress the movie further. Dr. Strange 2 is slated to start filming this summer too, so may also suffer the same fate as Spider-Man 3.
As for the MCU's more immediate worries, the original release date of Black Widow (May 1, 2020) is already out the window. The first problem that poses is whether it links in with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The first MCU TV show is supposed to be headed to Disney+ this August, but if its plot relies on Black Widow, that might have to be postponed too.
