[Rumor] Lakers "Have Done Enough To" Keep Anthony Davis

Last offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers mortgaged their future for one guaranteed year of Anthony Davis.
The gamble paid off immensely before the 2019-20 season was paused over the COVID-19 pandemic. Davis and LeBron James formed the ultimate super duo, guiding the Lakers to the league's top record in the Western Conference (49-14), 5.5 game up on the next closest team, the Los Angeles Clippers.
It remains to be seen if the season will continue, and if it does, the Lakers still have a long way to go to reach championship glory. The good news, however, is that it looks like Davis is here to stay for the long run.
According to Kyle Goon and Mirjam Swanson of the Los Angeles Daily News, the Lakers have succeeded in convincing Davis to re-sign this offseason.
"Most in league circles believe that work is largely done – that L.A. is where Davis wanted to be, LeBron James is the teammate he wanted to have, and that the Lakers have done enough to sell him on a future with the franchise.
Again last week, Pelinka mentioned Davis and James in a “partnership” with the front office, and since last July, (general manager Rob) Pelinka has reportedly sought Davis’ opinion in important decisions."
Davis is widely expected to opt out of his contract to officially become a free agent, which is normal for today's top stars. The 27-year-old reportedly turned down a four-year max extension for $146 million several months ago.

Davis requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2018-19 season, but they held on to him and waited patiently. In the offseason, he was traded to the Lakers in exchange for Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram and a trio of first-round selections.
After signing James in 2018 free agency, then-team president Magic Johnson knew it was pivotal to pair his new star with other major talents. The Lakers weren't able to make it work during the 2018-19 campaign, and Johnson resigned last April.
The Lakers finally got James' sidekick in Davis, and the two took the NBA by storm before the season went on pause. The two displayed remarkable chemistry together, and Davis has every reason to stay with a team that can help him compete for championships - with the best player of the 21st century.
