Taysom Hill Receives Two-Year, $21 Million Extension From Saints
With the 2020 NFL draft over, the New Orleans Saints quickly went to work in addressing their long-term plans at quarterback.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Saints have signed backup quarterback and versatile offensive weapon Taysom Hill to a two-year extension worth $21 million.
Head coach Sean Payton has used the BYU product all over the field during his young NFL career. Hill completed three passes for 55 yards during the 2019 regular season. On top of that, he had 156 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown to go along with 19 receptions for 234 yards and six receiving touchdowns.
Starting quarterback Drew Brees signed a two-year extension worth $50 million, but the future Hall of Famer has been taking it one year at a time. The Saints are seemingly planning for Hill to take over the reigns once Brees retires.
Brees and the Saints won their third straight NFC South division crown in 2019, but they were upset by the Minnesota Vikings in overtime of the Wild Card Round. In 2018, they fell to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime of the NFC Championship Game.

Robinson also reported that Saints are "finalizing a one-year deal" with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who led the NFL in passing yards during the 2020 season.
There is no shortage of quarterback depth in New Orleans now, and as Brees prepares to enter his age-41 season, the Saints could very well decide to use lots of Hill and/or Winston. This would help keep Brees fresh and healthy as he tries to bring home one more Super Bowl to New Orleans before he retires.
Hill still hasn't started any NFL games, and Winston might only spend the one season in New Orleans. But it doesn't hurt to have valuable quarterback insurace, And, it looks like the team has its Brees succession plan in place.
