The Best Order To Rewatch The Star Wars Movies Before Rise Of Skywalker Hits Disney+

Most Star Wars movies might be numbered, but watching them in order isn't necessarily as simple as starting with I and ending with IX.

Disney revealed this week that on May 4, 2020, (Star Wars Day) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit Disney+. That's a full two months ahead of when it planned to release the ninth chapter in the mainstream Star Wars saga on the streaming platform. A gift to the many of us stuck inside with very little to do right now.

That leaves anyone who hasn't seen all of the other movies yet or wants to watch them all again, with less than a week to do so before Rise of Skywalker hits Disney+. If you are one of the people planning to do that, it begs the question, what's the right order in which to watch them? There are a few conflicting schools of thought when it comes to that.

The most obvious is the way Disney+ has the Star Wars movies arranged, in order of their respective episode numbers. While that's all well and good, some of the franchise's installments don't have numbers. Anyone choosing this method should watch Solo and then Rogue One between Episode III and IV. Other than that, the roman numerals should guide the way.

Some fans think watching the movies in that order isn't what George Lucas intended, though. It's not the order in which he released the movies after all. For fans who want to watch the movies in release order, this is the way they'll need to do it. Episodes IV, V, and VI first. Then episode I, II, and III. The final stretch is the key one. Episode VII, followed by Rogue One, then VIII, up next is Solo, and finally, Rise of Skywalker when it hits Disney+ on May 4.

There are even more extreme ways in which to watch everything Star Wars has to offer for the completist fan, of course. If you really have the time, which many of us do right now, there are Star Wars TV shows to sneak in as well. Rebels takes place between Solo and Rogue One, The Mandalorian happens after Episode VI, and then Resistance after that but before Episode VII. Well, what are you still doing here? Best get that Star Wars marathon underway.
