[Report] Chances Of 2020 NFL Season Cancelation Are "Extremely Small"

The NBA, NHL and MLB all suspended play in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it looks like the 2020 NFL season will be starting at some point.

Citing sources, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the odds of the 2020 NFL season getting cancelled are "extremely small." Right now, the season is scheduled to begin on Sept. 10.

According to Florio, the expectation is that testing will be "efficient" and done in a simple and quick matter. Coaches, players and staff members theoretically won't have to wait long for test results.

If this ends up being the case, the league should be able to proceed with caution.

Interestingly, Florio's report says the belief is that the stadiums "will be open to fans." The league prefers to have them ready by Week 1, per Florio, but it's obviously too early to predict this four months in advance.

The defending Super Bowl champion usually hosts the Week 1 Thursday night Kickoff Game, so the Kansas City Chiefs will likely open up the season at Arrowhead Stadium.

The NFL has had to make several changes to its 2020 offseason program. The draft - initially slated to take place in Paradise, Nevada - was done in a virtual format. Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the picks from his home, while the broadcast displayed live streams of fans, coaches, executives, owners and players.

The NFL and NFLPA agreed to a virtual offseason program last month. There is no timetable on when the league may open up team facilities.

In the meantime, MLB, NHL and NBA are all looking at possibly playing games without any fans in attendance. The NHL has already talked about a willingness to delay the start of next season until December, which would buy enough time to finish out the 2019-20 campaign while giving the players enough offseason rest.

Everything remains up in the air, however. Different states have different social measures and protocols right now.
