Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Gets The Green Light From Paramount
Paramount has officially given the go-ahead to a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, confirming the writer and director of the first movie will return.
It seems like a lifetime ago since we were last allowed to go into a movie theater. Chances are one of the last movies many of you reading this went to see was Sonic the Hedgehog. Released in February of this year, Sonic was the unexpected hit of 2020, especially since all the other unexpected hits have been postponed indefinitely.
A little less than a year prior to its release, a trailer revealing an odd-looking live-action Sonic had half the blue hedgehog's fans laughing hysterically, and the other half brimming with rage. The reaction led to Paramount pushing back the release of the movie in order to fix it. A wise decision and the film wound up going on to break all sorts of video game movie adaptations at the box office.
Those of you yet to see the movie might want to look away now as there are some pretty major spoilers ahead. Despite the poor reaction during the build to Sonic's release, Sega and Paramount still loaded up its ending with pointers towards a sequel. Robotnik adopting the video game villain's signature look, and the arrival of Tails during the credits.
However, there was no confirmation that a sequel would definitely be coming, until now. Paramount has revealed to Variety that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a-go, and the sequel is in the very early stages of production. Director of the first movie Jeff Fowler will return, as will writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Casting for the project has not yet been confirmed.
Production on the project hasn't started yet, nor has the studio decided when it will. As exciting as this news is, we still do live in very uncertain times. Barring the announcement that Sonic 2 will indeed happen, this might be the last we hear about the project for a while. As for when Sonic fans can expect to see it in theaters, well, likely everything seems to feel at present, that is going to be a very long way off.
