How Michael Keaton Returning As Batman Might Work

Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to return as Batman for the first time since 1992, but how would that work exactly?
A lot of actors have had the opportunity to play Batman over the years, and fans of Gotham's Dark Knight will all have their personal favorite. Whether it be Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Christian Bale, or someone else. As for the future, that group is about to become an even bigger one. Robert Pattinson has been recruited to portray the dark hero in a standalone movie simply titled, The Batman.
This is where things get a little confusing. As is the case with Joker, The Batman will not be connected to the DCEU, at least for now. This might mean we haven't seen the last of Ben Affleck as Batman as more movies connected to the Justice League are coming soon. That will include a yet-to-be-titles Flash movie.
Here's where things might be about to get even more confusing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Keaton is in talks to play Batman in The Flash's movie. That's right, the same Michael Keaton who portrayed The Bat in Batman and Batman Returns 30 years ago. So if Affleck's Batman still exists in the DCEU, how is that going to work exactly?
Well, chances are the Flash movie will be based on a comic book story arc in which the light-footed hero can time travel. In Flashpoint, The Flash is able to travel to different universes. If that arc is adopted in the movie, he could travel to a universe in which Keaton is Batman, and Affleck's Batman doesn't exist. However, and no offense to Keaton whatsoever, there is also the sensitive subject of age to broach.
If the rumors are true, and Keaton is on board to return as Batman, he won't be racing around Gotham helping his fellow Justice League buddies. Instead, he will fill a similar role to the one Nick Fury does in the MCU. Samuel L. Jackson's character assembled and now oversees the Avengers. We would personally love to see Keaton play that role in the DCEU, as his very first outing as Batman in 1989 is still one of our favorites.
