Mike Trout & Gerrit Cole Will Be MLB's Highest-Paid Players In 60-Game Season

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA are getting close to an agreement for a 60-game season that will begin in a month's time around July 24.

The players, of course, won't be taking home their full salaries for the 2020 season due to the shortened schedule. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels and Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees, the two highest-paid players in baseball,,were set to make $36 million each in 2020.

As Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes noted, however, Trout and Cole are among the marquee MLB superstars who will see significant pay reductions for the 2020 season. Their salaries will drop all the way down from $36 million to $13.3 million for the shortened regular season.

The two All-Stars will still be baseball's highest-paid players for the 2020 season.

In the offseason, Cole signed a nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees - the largest deal ever for a pitcher. Last year, Trout agreed to a record 12-year, $426.5 million with the Angels.

That easily smashed the record for the richest MLB contract ever; Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies set the record a month earlier with a 13-year, $330 million contract that was signed in free agency.

The other three highest-paid players in baseball will also see their salaries drop by over $20 million each: Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies will go from $36 million to $13.3 million, Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros will go from $33 million to $12.2 million and David Price of the Los Angeles dodgers (acquired in the offseason in the Mookie Betts blockbuster trade) will go from $32 million to $11.9 million.

The 2020 MLB season was initially scheduled to take place on March 26, with all 30 teams participating on opening day. The regular season was set to conclude on Sept. 27, with the postseason beginning two days later. The season was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but barring an unexpected change of mind from the players' union, there will be baseball here in 2020.
