MLB & MLBPA Reach Agreement On Season, Players Will Report To Training Camp July 1

After weeks and weeks of frustrating and unproductive negotiations, Major League Baseball and the players' union have finally reached an agreement on a 2020 season.

On Tuesday evening, the MLBPA tweeted that they have resolved the "remaining issues" and that the players are now "reporting to training camps."

According to multiple reports, the players will enter training camp on July 1, with the regular season slated to begin on July 24 - six days before the resumption of the 2019-20 NBA season.

1994 was the last time where MLB failed to complete the season and hand out the World Series; it ended in August due to a strike that was never resolved.

The players and owners went back and forth on deciding the game length; the union previously submitted a 114-game regular season that was rejected. MLB eventually came back with a 76-game proposal, and the union responded with an 89-game proposal. It took a couple of weeks to reach middle ground, but they finally managed.

Players are set to receive their full prorated salaries for the season. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout and New York Yankees free agent pickup, ace pitcher Gerrit Cole, will be the league's highest-paid players at $13.3 million apiece; their salaries for the entire season would have been $36 million.

Although there were discussions about expanding the postseason field to 16 teams, the league will end up running a 10-team playoff format once again. Every regular season game is more important than ever before now.

The 2020 MLB season was initially scheduled to begin on March 26, with the regular season concluding on Sept. 27. The postseason would have began on Sept. 29, with the World Series ending on Oct. 28.

More details will emerge over the next day or so. But one way or another, there will be baseball - just as commissioner Rob Manfred firmly promised two weeks ago.
