New England Patriots' Super Bowl Odds Increase After Signing Cam Newton
It came three months after free agency opened, but the New England Patriots managed to make one of the biggest moves of the 2020 offseason on Sunday by signing Cam Newton to a one-year deal.
When Newton became a free agent, many believed the Patriots were an ideal landing spot following Tom Brady's departure. The latter signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.
After losing Brady and several other key contributors (including Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins in free agency plus Duron Harmon via trade), many began to write off the Patriots for 2020 - believing this to be a rebuilding phase.
But after signing Newton, the Patriots' 2020 Super Bowl odds increased drastically. PointsBet (h/t The Action Network) previously listed them as a 25-1 favorite to win it all in 2020, but those odds have now moved up to 20-1.
According to BetOnline (h/t Devon Clements of Sports Illustrated), the Patriots Super Bowl odds went from 28/1 to 25/1 following the addition of Newton. Not only that, but they now share the same 13/10 odds with the Buffalo Bills to win the AFC East.

The 2015 league MVP was released by the Carolina Panthers in the offseason; a Lisfranc injury caused him to miss the final 14 games of the 2019 campaign.Newton was also hampered by an injury in his right throwing shoulder during the 2017 season. The Panthers decided to move on from the franchise legend, and they made Teddy Bridgewater their starter by signing him to a three-year, $63 million contract.
Now, Newton will challenge second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham for the starting duties. 2020 will mark the first season without Brady as the Week 1 starter since 2001, when Drew Bledsoe held the reigns before an injury opened the door for Brady to take over.
The Panthers surprised many fans and pundits when they released the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Now, Newton gets the chance with a team that's known for helping veteran players bounce back.
