Robert Pattinson Reveals When He Found Out He Was Playing Batman

Twilight star Robert Pattinson is set to portray Batman/Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' upcoming 2021 Blockbuster, The Batman.

The 34-year-old actor was officially announced as the new Batman actor in May 2019, taking over the role from Ben Affleck - who portrayed the DC Comics hero in two Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).

In an interview with Total Film (h/t GamesRadar), Pattinson revealed the interesting circumstances when he learned he would be the next actor to suit up as the Caped Crusader.

As it turns out, Pattinson was in the early stages of working on Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, Tenet, when he received the good news.

"The morning of the first day," Pattinson said. "It was kind of insane. It was a very, very intense weekend. That was a crazy way to start Chris’ film. (laughs) I think I was doing the screen test, as well, on the Saturday before I started."

Tenet will hit theaters on July 17. The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John David Washington, Dimple Kapadia, Himesh Patela and Denzil Smith.

The Batman was slated for a June 25, 2021 release. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has pushed back production, and The Batman is now scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2021. Reeves claimed they filmed 25 percent of the movie before it had to go on pause.

Pattinson will be the sixth actor to portray Batman in a live action film. Michael Keaton first did it in Tim Burton's two blockbusters, Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). Val Kilmer replaced him for Batman Forever (1995), which was directed by Joel Schumacher.

Kilmer chose to leave the franchise, and George Clooney took on the role for the universally panned Batman & Robin (1997). The negative reviews of the movie led to the cancellation of a sequel, and Christian Bale would eventually suit up as Batman in Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. With Affleck stepping down, it's Pattinson's time to shine.

The Batman features a star-studded cast that also includes Zoë Kravitz (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth) Paul Dano (Edward Nashton Riddler), Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon) John Turturro (Carmine Falcone )and Peter Sarsgaard (District Attorney Gil Colson).
