Scrubs, The Office, And Other Shows Remove Or Edit Episodes Featuring Blackface
A number of shows have had episodes edited or removed from certain services due to them featuring depictions of blackface.
The Black Lives Matter movement might be about issues much more important than archived episodes of sitcoms, but that doesn't mean they should be ignored. In terms of Hollywood and the movie and TV industry, the BLM movement is looking to tackle and eliminate its institutionalized racism. Part of that includes the casual use of blackface in numerous TV shows dating back decades.
For the past few years, many of us will have watched these episodes on TV and streaming services and probably felt uncomfortable doing so. Those involved in the scenes and the shows in question, or those in charge of where the episodes are shown in the present day, have been taking action to make sure those uncomfortable scenes are never shown again.
The list of shows to either remove episodes containing depictions of blackface or edit the shots or scenes out of those episodes grows larger each day. So far, some of the shows to have had episodes or scenes removed from streaming services and TV scheduled rotation include Scrubs, The Office, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Community, 30 Rock, and Peep Show, among others.
In some cases, such as Always Sunny, the writers and stars of the show have not reacted to the removal of episodes at the time of typing this. However, the stars of Scrubs, including its creator Bill Lawrence, recorded and aired a podcast this week explaining the decision behind taking three of the show's episodes out of circulation. Lawrence explained that the existence of the episodes upset him, and it was an easy decision for him when it came to asking those currently airing the episodes to pull them from circulation.
Lawrence also revealed on the podcast that fans have reached out asking why he didn't just edit the episodes rather than banish them to TV's underbelly for the rest of time. He revealed that once the pandemic is over and he has access to the appropriate editing equipment, he will likely do that. The one episode of The Office which features blackface has also been edited rather than the whole episode taken away.
