Zoë Kravitz Says Robert Pattinson Is "Perfect" For The Batman Role

Twilight star Robert Pattinson is preparing to suit up as the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves' upcoming 2021 blocksbuter, The Batman.

Pattinson was cast as the iconic DC Comics hero after Ben Affleck stepped down from the role; the latter portrayed Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League 2017).

Reeves has assembled a star-studded cast that includes three of the main villains from the Rogues Gallery: Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Paul Dano as Riddler/Edward Nashton and Colin Farrell as the Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot.

Kravitz will be the third actress to portray Catwoman in a live action Batman film. Michelle Pfeiffer first did so in Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992), followed by Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), the final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

In an interview with Variety, Kravitz offered strong praise for Pattinson as Batman, believing that he's "perfect for" the role.

"Good question. First of all, he’s just a really good actor. He started out as this kind of teen pop sensation, and then I think we all kind of saw through his work that there was a lot more going on. He’s a really interesting artist, and that is very much Batman in a way. We have the illusion of Bruce Wayne, and then we have Batman in the shadows that has a lot more complicated things going on. So just in that, I think he’s perfect for this role.

He can relate in that way, and he looks good in the suit, man. He looks good in the suit. That’s a good jaw line. But he’s just a great actor and he brings so much to everything he does. I think that it’s a really hard role because people are expecting a lot. Also it’s restricting in a lot of ways.

You’re wearing the suit, and you can’t see their eyes, and you can only move in a certain way. So you have to get really creative in terms of how can you portray a multidimensional character? He’s way up for the challenge and has really interesting ideas already. I think he’s perfect, perfect casting."

Pattinson will be the sixth actor to play Batman in a live action film. Micheal Keaton first did it in Batman (1989) and the aforementioned Batman Returns. After leaving the franchise, Keaton was replaced by Val Kilmer for Batman Forever (1995), followed by George Clooney in Batman & Robin (1997).

The franchise was rebooted under Nolan, with Christian Bale wearing the cape and the cowl in the former's trilogy, followed by Affleck in Zack Snyder's two films.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received largely negative reviews, and Justice League was met with a lukewarm reception. The pressure is on Reeves and company to piece together something better here, but it's hard not to be encouraged with the strong cast he's put together.

The Batman will also star Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson.
