Agent: Raheem Mostert Wants A Contract Similar To Tevin Coleman

On Wednesday, Brett Tessler - the agent of San Francisco 49ers starting running back Raheem Mostert - announced that his client requested a trade following "unproductive talks" on a new deal.

Mostert emerged as the 49ers No. 1 running back last season, and he was instrumental in helping them reach Super Bowl LIV - where they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite Mostert's heroics, the 49ers have no intention of meeting into his contract wishes

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tessler said that Mostert wants a deal that's "in line with the highest paid" running backs on the 49ers. Teammate Tevin Coleman will make $4.55 million this season, and that's the number Mostert is looking at, per Rapoport.

Last offseason, Coleman signed a two-year deal worth $10 million with the 49ers. This reunited him with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who previously worked as Coleman's offensive coordinator in Atlanta.

Mostert is entering the second season of a three-year, $8.7 million contract. Per Spotrac.com, he'll make $2.575 million in base salary this season. That number increases slightly to $2.875 million for 2021.

Mostert finished last season with a career-best 772 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, taking over a San Francisco backfield that also included standouts Matt Breida and the aforementioned Coleman.

Mostert was arguably San Francisco's best player during the 2019-20 postseason. He finished with 336 total rushing yards and five touchdowns. The 28-year-old had one of the greatest individual postseason performances ever in the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, recording a whopping 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 37-20 victory.

But we're in an era where teams are often hesitant to invest long-term deals in running backs. The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't do this for Pro Bowler Le'Veon Bell, who sat out the entire 2018 season. Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowler Melvin Gordon sat out the first four games of 2019 due to a contract dispute. And now, Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is holding out in hopes of receiving a new extension.
