Andy Samberg, who plays Jake Peralta on the show, has revealed that the cast and crew of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are trying to figure out how the show can continue.
Chances are 2020 will go down as one of the most significant years in modern history. Between the global pandemic and the progression of the Black Lives Matter movement, the world is going to be a very different place heading out of 2020 than it was heading into it. Despite all of the bad that has happened, hopefully, the world will be changed for the better once all is said and done.
As for some of the change that is coming about off the back of the BLM movement, although it is about issues far greater than the TV industry, studios, actors, and writers are trying to do their part. That has mainly come in the form of episodes of shows featuring blackface being removed from circulation and streaming services.
However, Brooklyn Nine-Nine faces a more unique issue. How to continue on with a show that makes light of police work and frames it in an amusing way. Terry Crews, who plays a character with the same name on the show, has already revealed that scripts for the first four episodes of season eight have been scrapped.
Andy Samberg, who plays Jake Peralta, has given a little more insight into the work going on behind the scenes on the show right now. "We're all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now," Samberg explained during an interview with People. "I know that we'll figure it out, but it's definitely a challenge. So we'll see how it goes."
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has actually touched upon the unfair treatment of black people by the US police force in past episodes. Captain Raymond Holt has mentioned on numerous occasions that his homosexuality and the color of his skin prevented him from rising up as quickly as he should have in the NYPD. Plus, there's an episode where Terry is stopped and arrested by a white officer simply for being out at night in a predominantly white neighborhood.
