Jordan Love Signs Four-Year, $12.38 Million Rookie Contract With Packers

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love reached an agreement on a rookie contract.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Love's deal is for four years and slightly over $12.383 million, with a signing bonus of approximately $6.56 million. Garafolo noted that the contract is also fully guaranteed.

The Packers traded up via the Miami Dolphins and selected the Utah State quarterback with the 26th overall selection. The pick came as a surprise to many, since Green Bay already has one of the league's best quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers. Not only that, but many scouts and analysts didn't think Love would go in the first round at all.

Although Rodgers latter didn't look like a two-time MVP last season, he excelled in a game manager-like role and helped the Packers win 13 games, en route to an NFC Championship Game appearance.

Green Bay fell to the San Francisco 49ers by a final score of 37-20. Many believed that the Packers would use their first-round pick to find another receiver for Rodgers, but they instead decided to use it on his successor - even though No. 12 signed a four-year contract extension two years ago.

Rodgers is in a similar situation as Brett Favre, the man he eventually replaced in Green Bay, 15 years ago. Although the Packers already had a future Hall of Famer quarterback, they decided to use their 2005 first-round pick on Rodgers.

Three years later, Rodgers became the starter, and he's emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the game. In an ideal world, he will play at a high level for a few more years. When the time comes, Love can take over as the starter.

That's all for another day, however. Rodgers is unquestionably the starting quarterback here in 2020, and possibly much longer. But it doesn't help to have a succession plan in place, as we saw with Favre and Rodgers. Only time will tell if Love takes over as the starter soon enough, or if he'll have to wait a long period.
