Los Angeles Chargers Sign Joey Bosa To $135 Million Contract

Joey Bosa has emerged as one of the NFL's most dominant defensive players, and the Los Angeles Chargers have awarded him for it.

On Tuesday evening, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Chargers signed Bosa to a massive five-year contract extension worth $135 million, including $102 million in guaranteed money.

Last offseason, the Chargers picked up the fifth year on Bosa's rookie contract. He was entering the final season of his contract, but the massive extension will prevent him from hitting the free agent market in 2021.

Bosa's $135 million deal is tied for the sixth richest contract in NFL history, along with Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Among all defensive players, only Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack has a more lucrative contract; he signed a six-year, $141 million deal in the 2018 offseason.

Per Spotrac.com, Bosa is now just one of nine defensive players who carries a contract of $100-plus million, along with Donald, Mack, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark, Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.

Bosa was drafted third overall by the Chargers in 2016. The two-time Pro Bowler won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after recording 10.5 sacks. For his career, the 25-year-old Bosa has 40 sacks and five forced fumbles.

Despite Bosa's dominance, the Chargers have only made the playoffs once over the past four years. That was in 2018, when they went 12-4 and reached the AFC Divisional Round, falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers slumped to a disappointing 5-11 record in 2019, finishing last in the AFC West division.

But there is optimism about a turnaround in 2020. The Chargers have one of the league's best defenses led by Bosa, Melvin Ingram, Casey Hayward and Derwin James. If Bosa and company can continue to perform at a high level, they could very well return to the playoffs in 2020.
