Naya Rivera’s Likely Death Seen As A Reflection Of Her Glee Co-Stars Fates

Naya Rivera, best known for playing Santana Lopez on Glee, is presumed dead after disappearing at a California lake, authorities said. The 33-year-old actress leaves behind a 4-year-old son.

Her fate resembles that of her co-stars Cory Monteith, who died in 2013 of a drug overdose, and Mark Salling, who died by an apparent suicide in 2018. Yet given the circumstances of her death, her passing seem more tragic since her apparent death was deemed accidental and occurred while she was with her young son.

Rivera began acting at the age of 4 on the show The Royal Family. Later, she appeared on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Matters, The Bernie Mac Show, Baywatch, CSI: Miami, and Glee, where she showcased her singing talent and broke barriers as an out and proud lesbian.

Her death comes at a time when many are coping with loss and anxiety due to COVID-19. Also, her passing is a sad reminder of how fragile life can be. Many of her friends and co-stars have taken to social media to pray for her safe return, though that seems unlikely, according to authorities.

Glee co-star Harry Shum wrote in a tweet that he was "praying," while fellow Glee star Heather Morris wrote about Rivera on her Instagram stories: "We need all the prayers we can get to bring our Naya back home to us. We need your love and light." Glee alum Damian McGinty added, "Sick to my stomach. Please pray."

Jackee Harry, who starred with Rivera on The Royal Family, wrote: "Prayers up for the lovely Naya Rivera."

The search for Rivera began again Thursday morning with divers from the region helping out. According to CBS Los Angeles, Rivera’s son told investigators that he and his mother were swimming, but that she went under.

"Praying for the safe return of Naya Rivera. Holding her and her son in my heart. Holding them close," actress and comedian Casey Wilson wrote on Instagram.
