TikTok Threatens To Sue Trump Administration Over App Ban

TikTok has threatened to sue Donald Trump for banning its hugely popular app. The short-form video app company, which is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company, has confirmed that it will file a lawsuit to challenge the president’s executive order that will ban TikTok unless it is sold to an American company.

TikTok says it will sue the administration this week following the August 6 ban, which claimed that the app “continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States” given that Chinese officials could potentially order TikTok to disclose user data.

On Saturday, TikTok released a statement stating that although the company disagrees with the president’s concerns, they have attempted to reach a resolution in good faith for the past year, adding that the administration has ignored the facts and tried to interfere with private business dealings.

TikTok also insisted that to protect the rule of law as well as its users, they will challenge the executive order in court. The company claims it has never divulged private user data and would refuse to if asked by the Chinese government. Trump’s order prohibits any US company to do business with TikTok after September 20. The president has issued a comparable order against Tencent’s WeChat.

In another executive order issued on August 14, Trump ordered ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US assets in 90 days, alleging that the company was also suspicious of violating national security interests. Several US companies have expressed an interest in buying TikTok, including Microsoft, Twitter and Oracle, which is led by chairman Larry Ellison, a known Trump supporter.

In recent statements, Trump has said that the US government should receive a percentage of the proceeds of the sale of TikTok, yet experts have stated that there’s no legal precedent for the government to benefit from a private sale. TikTok has been valued at roughly $50 billion by a group of US investors, Reuters reported.

TikTok, which has stated it has more than 100 million US users, is led by CEO Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive.
