Black Actors Had A Historic Year At The 2020 Emmys

Black actors enjoyed a record number of wins at this year’s Emmy Awards. Watchmen star Regina King won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie. Her second award in this category after winning in 2018 for Seven Seconds.

In addition to King, Euphoria star Zendaya won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She had previously won the Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria, which was scheduled to start filming its second season in the second quarter of 2020, however, production was delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other winners included Uzo Aduba, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Mrs. America in which she portrayed Shirley Chisholm, the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Aduba had previously won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014, and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2015 for Orange Is The New Black.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played the omniscient Doctor Manhattan in Watchmen, won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. The actor will next portray civil rights activist Bobby Seale in The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Anthony McCoy / Candyman in the sequel to the 1992 film of the same name. He will also appear in The Matrix 4.

Eddie Murphy took home the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He returned to the show for the first time since 1984. He had originally been a cast member from 1980 to 1984. Also, Maya Rudolph won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Vice Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live. Rudolph is expected to reprise her role this fall before the presidential election.

At last week’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Rudolph also won an Emmy for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her work in Netflix’s Big Mouth, and RuPaul won the Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program for RuPaul’s Drag Race. It was his fourth win in this category.
