Seahawks-Patriots Drew 12.22 Million Viewers, "Sunday Night Football" Viewership Drops

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots went down to the very wire once again, but the ratings were down significantly from last week's Sunday Night Football NBC broadcast.

According to Dominic Patten of Deadline, the Week 2 thriller between Russell Wilson and Cam Newton drew 12.22 million viewers with a 3.5 rating.

This was significantly down from the Week 1 Sunday Night Football broadcast between the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, which drew 18.94 million viewers.

That game was also considerably down in viewership compared to the Week 1, 2019 Sunday Night Football contest between the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, which garnered 22.7 million viewers.

Of course, NBC had immense competition on Sunday Night - the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards and Game 2 of the NBA's Western Conference Final between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets.

Early estimates for the Emmys viewership was recorded at 5.11 million, per Patten.

Coincidentally, for the third straight meeting, the Seahawks-Patriots came down to the one-yard line. The Week 2 tilt ended when the Seahawks stopped Newton on a running play at the goal line to clinch a 35-30 victory.

This came four years after the Seahawks defeated the Patriots at Gillette Stadium by forcing a turnover on downs at the one-yard line. That game ended when Tom Brady threw an incomplete pass to Tom Brady, as the Seahawks escaped with a 31-24 victory.

Two seasons earlier, the Patriots defeated the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX when Wilson was picked off by Malcolm Butler at the one-yard line. Who could have expected that the next two meetings would also come down to goal line stands?

The Seahawks-Patriots Week 2 game may not have garnered the high ratings that NBC is accustomed to. But it should go down as one of the best games in the respective careers of Wilson and Newton. The former became just the second quarterback to throw five touchdowns against Bill Belichick's Patriots. Newton had 397 passing yards and three total touchdowns in the game.
