Shannen Doherty Updates Fans On Her Cancer Diagnosis
Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Shannen Doherty, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, recently updated fans on her status. In February, Doherty revealed that her breast cancer had returned and metastasized, spreading beyond her breast and lymph nodes.
Now, the 49-year-old actress has opened up about her current condition in an interview with Elle magazine. “I try to treasure all the small moments that most people don’t really see or take for granted,” Doherty said.
“The small things are magnified for me. We have this endless well within us, and it’s just about continuing to dig in that well for the strength to face adversity — and so that we can also see all the beauty,” she added.
In 2019, Doherty's breast cancer resurfaced as metastatic after she was initially diagnosed four years before. After undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer went into remission in 2017. Since then, the disease has since spread to her spine. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Doherty has been self-isolating at her Malibu home with her husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko.
Last summer, Doherty participated in the BH90210 reunion. Now, she is developing a new television show and continues to advocate on behalf of women with metastatic breast cancer. “Others want to put you out to pasture,” she said. “I’m not ready for pasture. I’ve got a lot of life in me.”
Although she is determined to fight, Doherty is not in denial. She has spent her time writing letters to her loved ones and recording video messages for her family. The process is not easy though. “I feel like I’m a very, very healthy human being. It’s hard to wrap up your affairs when you feel like you’re going to live another 10 or 15 years,” she said.
For now, Doherty will continue with treatment, including hormone therapy to block the estrogen feeding her cancer and drug treatment to target metastatic disease. She is also open to other treatment options if that doesn’t work. Although she’s often been portrayed as difficult to work with, she believes she has “been a really good human being.”
