Silvio Berlusconi Hospitalized After Testing Positive For Covid-19

Last night, Italian media mogul and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who tested positive for COVID-19, was admitted to a Milan hospital with pneumonia. The 83-year-old is reportedly undergoing "precautionary monitoring" of his infection at San Raffaele Hospital, according to one of his top aides, Sen. Lucia Ronzulli.

Berlusconi, who has been diagnosed with the “beginnings of pneumonia in both lungs,” is being kept in isolation in a reserved section on the sixth floor of the hospital. He has reportedly been put on oxygen, though he isn’t in intensive care.

On Thursday, Berlusconi, who was still at his estate on the outskirts of Milan, told his supporters that he no longer had a fever or pain after his diagnosis earlier in the week. Italian media reported that two of his children, as well as his girlfriend, were also recently diagnosed with COVID-19.

"Unfortunately, this isn’t a cold," he told La Stampa. "Now it touches me — but not only me but also my family — I realize more than ever how grave" the pandemic is. I'm aware of how much sorrow it has sowed in so many families, of how much pain it has caused so many people.”

Berlusconi, who has had several medical conditions in the past, is considered a high-risk COVID-19 patient. In 1997, he overcame prostate cancer, and in 2006, he was fitted with a pacemaker at a US hospital after fainting at an event. He has also had bowel surgery and an inflammatory eye condition in the past.

Berlusconi spent his summer vacation at his seaside villa on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast, which has been linked to numerous recent cases of COVID-19. He had previously stayed at another one of his villas in France after his family expressed concern over the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Lombardy, where Berlusconi’s home and business empire are located.

On Thursday, he reiterated his promise to keep campaigning in upcoming regional elections in Italy for the center-right party, Forza Italia, which he founded in 1994. The party has declined in popularity in recent years as the former prime minister battled legal problems. In 2013, he was convicted of tax fraud and had to surrender his Senate seat. Now, he is a member of the European Parliament.
