Los Angeles Dodgers Set Merchandise Sales Record After Winning 2020 World Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers finally ended more than a decade of postseason heartbreak and misery on Tuesday, winning their first World Series championship since 1988.
The Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in Game 6 to end their 32-year championship drought. The victory came less than three weeks after the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals to win their first championship in a decade.
After the World Series victory, Fanatics executive chairman Michael Rubin reported that the Dodgers "set a new record for the first eight hours of championship merch sales" at Fanatics.
This passed a record that was set by the Chicago Cubs (2016 World Series), Philadelphia Eagles (Super Bowl LII champions in the 2017 season) and this year's Lakers, per Rubin.
The Dodgers lost to the Houston Astros in the 2017 World Series, and to the Boston Red Sox in the 2018 fall classic. Last year, they fell to the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series, which only added to the notion that this team couldn't win the big one.
In the offseason, the Dodgers made a blockbuster deal that changed the landscape of Major League Baseball, acquiring 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts and former All-Star pitcher David Price from the Red Sox.
Betts, predictably, was the final piece the Dodgers needed to get over the hump. Widely regarded as the league's second best player after Mike Trout, Betts' leadership, humble personality and all-time clutch play was instrumental in helping Los Angeles end a World Series drought.
He was on the 2018 Red Sox team that defeated the Dodgers in the World Series, too.
Perhaps no team in the history of professional sports endured a longer period of playoff heartbreak than the Dodgers from 2008 to 2019: Four eliminations in the NLCS, three eliminations in the NLDS and two World Series defeats. 2020 was their year, however, and the team is in great shape to win even more championships with this group.
