Tristan Jarry Signs Three-Year, $10.5 Million Extension With Pittsburgh Penguins

If it weren't obvious enough already, the Pittsburgh Penguins made it clear which goalie they plan to move forward with.

On Saturday, the Penguins announced that they have signed goalie Tristan Jarry to a three-year contract extension worth $10.5 million. The deal has a team-friendly average annual value of $3.5 million.

The 25-year-old Jarry is coming off his best season yet as a pro. He set career highs in wins (20), save percentage (.921), goals against average (2.43) and shutouts (three).

For his career, Jarry is 34-20-4 in 62 game appearances with a .914 save percentage, a 2.61 goals against average and five shutouts.

With Jarry now signed, one can expect general manager Jim Rutherford to trade former starter Matt Murray this offseason. Rutherford has acknowledged that they won't be able to keep both goalies, and Murray has been mentioned in trade rumours for several months now.

Not only are the Penguins up against the cap, but they'll only be able to protect one goalie in next year's Seattle expansion draft. Rutherford's best bet is to get value for Murray now rather than risk losing him to Seattle for nothing.

Murray was the starting goalie for the Pittsburgh Penguins in their 2016 Stanley Cup championship run. He missed most of the 2017 postseason, but after taking over for a struggling Marc-Andre Fleury in the Eastern Conference Final, Murray kept the starting job and led the Pens to their second straight Stanley cup.

There will be no shortage of interest in Murray on the trade market. He's been heavily linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who would have to trade Frederik Andersen in order to make a deal work. The Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes are among the other teams that should be in the hunt for a new starting goalie.

Murray will have a fine legacy in Pittsburgh, but it's now Jarry's time to shine.
