Lori Loughlin Released From Prison After Two Months
On Monday, Full House star Lori Loughlin was released from an East Bay federal prison, about 40 miles east of San Francisco, after serving two months for her part in the 2019 college admissions scandal. The 56-year-old actress surrendered in late October after being ordered to report no later than November 19. She will now undergo two years of supervised release and must complete 100 hours of community service. She has also been ordered to pay a $150,000 fine.
Loughlin’s husband, Mossimo Giannulli, is currently serving five months in prison and must undergo two years of supervised release, as well as, complete 250 hours of community service and pay a $250,000 fine. The couple, who initially pleaded not guilty of paying $500,000 to get both of their daughters into the University of Southern California, finally cut a deal in May.
Loughlin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, while Giannulli pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and honest services wire and mail fraud. The deal allowed the couple to avoid charges of money laundering and federal programs bribery.
As a result of her actions, Loughlin was fired from The Hallmark Channel, where she starred in Garage Sale Mystery and When Calls the Heart. She was also let go from Netflix’s Fuller House, while her younger daughter Olivia Jade lost her partnership with TRESemmé and the Sephora chain of beauty products.
The investigation, code named Operation Varsity Blues, was made public on March 12, 2019, by United States federal prosecutors. At least 53 people have been charged as part of the conspiracy in which 33 parents of college applicants are accused of paying more than $25 million between 2011 and 2018 to William Rick Singer to fraudulently enhance entrance exam test scores and bribe college officials.
Actress Felicity Huffman, who was also charged with a single count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest service mail fraud, was sentenced in September 13, 2019, after pleading guilty. She served 14 days in prison and was ordered to complete 250 hours of community service, undergo one-year supervised release and pay a $30,000 fine.
