Larry King, Hospitalized With COVID-19, Leaves ICU

Talk-show host Larry King, who is being treated for COVID-19 at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, has reportedly been moved out of the intensive care unit and is breathing on his own, a spokesman said on Monday. On January 2, it was revealed that King had been hospitalized 10 days earlier in a Los Angeles hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

King entered the ICU on New Year’s Eve and was receiving oxygen but is now able to breathe on his own, said David Theall, a spokesperson for Ora Media, a production company formed by King. The 87-year-old broadcasting veteran had just shared a video phone call with his three sons, Theall added.

King, who is best known as host of Larry King Live, which ran on CNN from 1985 to 2010, has won two Peabodys, an Emmy award, and 10 Cable ACE Awards. From 2012 until 2020, he hosted Larry King Now on Hulu and RT America. He continues to host Politicking with Larry King, a weekly political talk show, which has aired weekly since 2013.

King has faced numerous health obstacles in his life. On February 24, 1987, he suffered a major heart attack and then underwent successful quintuple-bypass surgery. During a 2017 examination, his doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his lung, which was successfully removed with surgery. He has also survived prostate cancer.

On April 23, 2019, King underwent a scheduled angioplasty and also had stents inserted. Before undergoing surgery, King suffered a stroke that left him in a coma “for weeks.” He later said he had considered suicide following the stroke, telling Los Angeles television station KTLA, "I thought I was just going to bite the bullet. I didn't want to live this way."

King has been married eight times, to seven women. He has five children and nine grandchildren, as well as four great-grandchildren. Both of his children with his wife Alene, Andy and Chaia, died within weeks of each other in August 2020, Andy at 65 from a heart attack and Chaia at 51 from lung cancer.
